• Question about changing plugs on a 4th gen firebird...

What is the easiest way to change the back spark plugs (cylinders 5 and 6) in a 4th gen Firebird.
Thanks in advance,
Jim

if you can dude i found it made the job SO much quicker if you use the type of socket tha has a "bolt" end on it that way you can slip on a wrench tha fits it and just crank away i foud that the easyest way to do the rear plug on the back and also the middle plug on the driver side
as for back plug on the drivers side... its a snap you need a ratchet and the socke and thast it total through the compleat change i used a 3/4 wrench to fit the socket a 3 inch extention a swivel and a ratchet didnt take me long at all

or you can just kill yourself now. like gufi said, the middle one on the passenger side is pretty easy to get to with the hexagonal socket that you can fit a wrench onto. The last one is the hardest, we could barely get the extension into the socket. We spent the most time on it. I forget how we even did it. Good luck man.

If you pull out the heat shields from the exhaust manifolds, it makes getting at the plugs pretty easy. With a plug socket, short extension, stubby ratchet head, and a breaker bar, you can get all of them out.

The heat shields take a little manipulating to get out, but if you lift and rotate them to the proper angle, they come right out.

Does GM make access ports in the wheel wells? I am really surprised if they don't. I don't have the car but am asking for a friend so I can't look right now.
Thanks,
Jim

on the passenger side you can get those front two from the top ,drivers side you can get the first one from the top... the rest (I) have to go underneath the car to change.. jack it up and use jack stands or use ramps if you have found some that work that work...

I hear if you break your left arm it is easier to get to them because the break acts like an extra elbow. I have changed mine in my camaro I have no idea of they are any different in a bird but they can't be much different. All I do is fight till they come out. The only easey way os to have someone else do it. but then it has betten you and you are a wimp JK good luck

Jim, get what is called a universal joint for your socket wrench with a extention. This way you can have the extention to reach down in, and the universal will allow you to swivel in any direction. I have always done it that way. Seems to be the least painfull. ;)
