  • A/C Compressor is humming...wthell?

My car makes a very loud humming sound when I turn on the AC, its especially loud at idle, if I rev the car it goes away kinda. Im thinking its low on Freeon but I wanted to be sure, its kinda annoying. Whenever Im at a stop light Ill turn off the AC so itll shut up.

Is that the same sound of the compressor working? When I turn my AC on you hear the AC compressor clutch kick in and things tend to get a little louder but its nothing too crazy. Our systems are set up so they won't even turn on if the coolant is too low so thats most likely not the case. Other than that I'm not too sure, AC issues can tend to be pretty tough to diagnose. Is the noise coming from the engine or inside the car?

That hum you hear is your electric fan running. Check it out sometime. When your car is sitting still and the A/C is on the electric fan turns on to pull air through the condensor an the radiator. Otherwise the the A/C wouldnt work unless you were moving.

Do our fans use electric motors or fan belts?

electric motors, phoenix im in the same boat in my Camaro i no longer use the AC because of the noise it makes so i roll with the windows down.

It COULD just be the ac clutch but its pretty expensive and a few more bucks and you get your self a new compressor.

Then you would also need a few cans of 134.

Its not the radiator fans, I have a manual fan switch, I turned them on without the ac on and its not those.

Ok well then its probably just your compressor. They can make some pretty strange noises when their running so I would just regard it as normal unless it locked up or quit working. Then as of which if you didnt use your a/c very much you could rip it out and save yourself some weight and just roll down the windows.

dude! this happened to my parents' '91 corvette! just weeks after this began happening, it sorta "exploded" and they had to replace the compressor, so as mentioned before it may be the compressor. but the '91 vette's compressor was in very bad shape it turned out. if i were you, id have it looked at. but what do i know, im only 16. lol.
