  • Need everyones help (might fix the 1441 code)

Ok I have finally discovered what the problem might be shooting the 1441 emmisions code on my 1996 3.8 Bird. After reading many post their was no information that helped and all the engine compartment hoses were perfectly sound.

So, I have found a black hose in the rear drivers side of the car that is connected to the Evap Cannister tucked in the drivers rear wheel well. Their are 4 hoses that connect to the Cannister. 1.Shoots straight up and goes towards the front of the car. 2. The next (2) hoses connect to an elbow and shoot off to the front. 3. This hose which comes off of an L shaped valve and is disconnected. After Doing research I believe this is the Fuel tank Vent hose which connects to the Vent Restricter on the top of the fuel tank. The cannister sucks vapors out of the fuel tank and recycles it somehow(from what Ive read). My questions are (1)Could this be throwing my ses p1441 code emmision systems code? (2) How can I re-connect this hose to the top of the fuel tank? (3) How can I make sure this is the hose? (4) Does anyone have a hose in the rear of the car just disconnected near the fuel tank?

Any help would be great Im hoping I can solve the problem and help the numerous f-body owners who have encountered this problem. I have 70k on my Bird but she is a 96 so I missed the recall or warranty offer. Thanks for answering. Ive included a detailed photo from the Haynes Manual of what the F-body 93-96 emmisions hose system looks like. Circled is the hose i believe it is. Thanks

If the hose is disconnected, try reconnecting it within its radiaus. There has to be a line to connect it to, they don't just disappear.

I think the line connect to the top of the gas tank...I cant reach it unless I take everything off. but I want to make sure first.

Not to insult your intelligence, but, is your gas cap on correctly? If it is loose it can throw SES codes. Check the cap good too. If it looks non-OEM or is jacked up any try replacing it.

There are also 4 hoses that connect at the top of the fuel tank and I think they all run down the side between the tank and the backseat. It's possible, though not likely, that one of them came loose. There should be a point underneath the car where you can look up between the backseat and the gas tank. Shine a flashlight up in there and you should be able to see if any have come loose. You could also try tugging on them, VERY GENTLY, and see how much play they have. They should all be pretty tight. If one seems very loose, that might be the culprit.

          Good luck.

Can't help you right now... but in a few weeks I'm gonna be installing a new catback, so my car will be up on ramps and I'll have a mechanic helping me. I'll see if I can find it for you.

Against my better judgement to help you after your attitude...

There are two ways to reconnect the hose.

                  1) Drop the fuel tank. P.I.T.A. process from what i've heard. Refer to Haynes manual.

                  2) Cut a hole in the hump behind the back seat. You'll need a dremel and this web site http://www.worldisround.com/articles/12533/index.html You won't need quite as big a hole since you will not need to remove the actual pump. I think there is only one connector visible in those pictures. The other 3 are just after the 90 degree bends.

Get access to that area and you won't need to keep wondering where that hose connects to, and it does go somewhere. I don't think auto manufacturers tend to build in random loose hoses.

Choose the lesser of two evils.

Edit - Make sure you read the first user comment on that page. Apparently the location of the fuel pump is different on a V6 than on a V8, which is what's pictured and what I worked on. This might mean the connectors are in a different spot as well. Can't help you on that one.

Well sorry about the attitude Im so frustrated with this damn 1441 and the ses light....sorry. Anyway thanks for your post Im considering what to do. I put tape on the hose and I havent shot the code yet...but we will see. I really need to figure out where the hoses off the cannister go and which one is the one with the vapor line before I try either one of the methods. I had thought of cutting it their but I want to make sure.....Thanks again sorry for the comment.

Wow thats an amazing write up.....and that would be the way to go to replace any fuel pump or gain access to the hose....would be bad to do to take care of the future problem when the pump goes out.

One of the hoses should go up near the gas tank cap, there should be a rubber boot that connects to it, not a plastic clip. If that is the line you are talking about. Two lines should go to the front of the car with rubber boots as well and one is conected by plastic clip that returns to the front of the car. There IS one line that is vapor release that just connects to the chassis/frame that is open ended. It is supposed to be like that.
