  • Happened to anyone else? Or is my bird possessed?

I don't know what is happening. The nightmare began over a year ago. I got a SES code 1870. I ignored it since it would go on and off. Well 2 months ago my tranny went. I had it rebuilt and that is when the problem began. What happens is that I'll be driving and then if I gun it, the car backfires, and stalls out! I turn the key and it cranks but it will not turn over. So I wait about 10 minutes and try again and it starts right up like nothing ever happened. I took it to the mechanic and he said it was my fuel pump, so he replaced it. Well $300 later it is still doing it. I've taken it to 2 other mechanics and no one can find the problem.

Please help!! This is driving me nuts (not to mention broke). I don't want to sell my bird but I'm starting to feel like this is my last and only option. I don't know if this has anything to do with the transmission so that is why I posted it in Gen Tech. I can't even go to the track because I don't want this to happen and I end up looking stupid. Seems I can't race it without this happening. So why have a Firebird if you can't haul a$$??

I've heard that it could be something electrical or the MAF sensor, or something with the accelerator. The thing is no one knows for sure. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It just happened again! I jumped on the freeway and stepped on the gas to pick up speed and as soon as I did this I heard it backfire and then the gauges all came on and the car had stalled out. I rolled to the emergency lane and cranked it. No luck unitl about 7 minutes then it started right up. No SES light either!!Has anyone else had this problem?

My guess is the MAF. Sounds like your spark and fule mixture are off at WOT. The computer is proly getting incorrect readings from the MAF sensor.

IceBird thanks for answering my post. It seems you were the only one who took some time to help me out. Appreciate it. Can you tell me how I can check the MAF to see if that is the problem? I'm still not getting any SES light.

Is your car obd2? You didn't post any info on your car. If it is obd2, take it to the dealer and have them scan the codes, they should be able to see whats going on and be able to replicate it with the scanner plugged in. Tell the tech exactly what it is doing and when it happens. Maybe 100$ to have them check it out for diagnostic then parts for whatever is wrong. In the future post year model mods and any other revelant info, it makes it much easier to help out with that info in hand.

Oh sorry about that Razzer. I'm kinda new to this but it's a 99 Firebird V6. I have the whisper lid, K & N filter, removed MAF screen, and the air box cut out. The exhaust is straight piped (w/O2 sim) to a Flowmaster muffler. I don't know what a obd2 is?

This problem started after I had the tranny rebuilt($1600) so I wonder if it has anything to do with this(I just don't see how though). It's driving me crazy every mechanic says something different. Thanks to them I've already replaced the fuel pump($300), fuel filter, and have had it diagnosed 3 times ($35 each). If it is the MAF how do I test it? I really don't want to go to the dealer because the warranty is expired and I know they are going to stick it to me, so any help is appreciated.

if you take it to like a parts store they'll diagnose it for free... that'll at least tell ya what the code that your getting is for... i hear the MAFs arent very expensive if that happens to be your problem... sorry im not anymore help... it shouldnt have anything to do with the tranny though unless they messed up something while they were under there workin on it...

It might be because of your maf screen has been taken out. Put it back in and see what happens.

I'll try putting back the screen but I have had it like this for a while and it used to run fine, but I'll try anything right now.
