• Performance Questions???

I own a 96 3.8 a4 firebird. Im about to start modding it very soon.My plans are as follow:

Im going to purchase a complete 1998 3.8 engine and have everything cleaned block, heads cleaned and springs replace and possibly bore engine out a little.

    GT2 cam

    LSD w/ 3.73 gears

    shift kit

since im going to purchase a 1998 complete block im going to purchase a ram air hood and then run a Whisper Lid

Ive already got exhaust but im might change it, What would be the best to use????

would all of this be a descent set-up??? What else could i do to gain a little extra HP, i wanna keep the car NA.

Ill appreciate all input, thank you

first of all, instead of going with a 98 3.8 go with a 99+ because of the angled tb on the 98's. Ok, now, what kind of exhaust do you have? SEARCH for good exhausts, people post about the 'best' one all the time. Sounds like you know what you wanna do with your car, but i would also replace the pushrods and lifters while you are throwin the cam in. I dont think i would even really worry about boring the block, you wont see much in gains out of it. As far as the GT2 cam is concerned, good choice, you should see 40+ rwhp out of it. Also look into a high stall torque converter, like a 3800stall. that will help your launches quite a bit, and will compliment the gears well. Look into tuning also, as you will need it for the GT2. Get HPTuners or DHP, a hypertech wont do for that... BTW, get some headers while your at it...

i might also add a 160 or 180 thermostat and possibly an aluminum driveshaft.

Ive never ran my car at the track but with all of this stuff about what would it run??

Wasn't the electronic throttle body started in '99? If so, you'd need a little bit more than just the '99 engine (pedals, computer, etc)

I think you right about the electronic stuff because someone told me not to mess with the 99+ models

To buy the engine and have it cleaned, buy a cam, gears, lsd and all that other stuff...its going to be more than 3,000 unless you do ALL the work yourself.

                        OK, a couple comments:

                        1) You can't use a Whisper Lid on a 96, with or without a ram air hood.

                        2) What PCM did you intend to use? 96 or 98? You can't use a 98.

                        3) Can't use 99+ engine due to the electronic TB, without major wiring changes (e.g., whole harness replacement).
