Ok, I got my car at about 68k (stupid stupi me, I know). I'm just now looking to mod it now that I am realizing there is no possible way I can trade it in without about $3000 upfront because of the huge amount of negative equity.

My question is, is there even a point to mod a car this high in the miles? Is **** going to start falling apart if I throw a cam on there or headers? Is there certain things that I should replace before I even get into modding it out? Or should I just mod it and not worry about anything breaking until it happens?

I don't know how long these 3800 series II's last, so shedding some light would be cool. I've been contemplating on getting a cam for a few weeks now(have cash in hand), but keep pulling away last second. Not sure what is stopping me.

my opinion: if youve been maintaining it well (changing fluids/filters at the reccomended intervals) just keep it! i was looking at the pics and it's bad *** ! i just got my bird with 55,000 miles on it and i plan on keeping it for a very long time! my 2 cents anyhoo...

      Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, everything is good on it right now. It's great, 'cept for the stupid motor for the driver's side window.

But keeping it and modding it are two different things. Will an engine with that much mileage and all that hold up to a bunch of new mods?

Dude i bought my car at like 56k, and it's about to turn over 80k. The mileage kills me everything I look at it turning over more but i've been really keeping that car in good shape. Just do your tuneups everyso often and like greenasgrass said change your fluids when you need to. Every cars going to get older it's all just how you maintained it. Your car is really nice man. 3.8s are really really good engines. They will last a really long time. I've seen a few last over 200,000 mi. So your good for a while man.

Bought my 'bird with 76k miles on it 2 years ago. I now have 115k miles on it with the mods in my sig. Still going strong. The dyno #s in my sig are from when my car had 113k miles, bad EGR valve, bad wires, and the wrong clutch installed (long story).

I've got a new tranny and clutch, so

Sweet, thanks alot guys. I don't know, I guess I kind of felt hesitant throwing a bunch of money into a high milage car. I guess I could always rebuild to the L67 specs down the road anyways =)

I ordered the SLP CAI last night so I forced myself into keeping it. Heh, stupid me. Now I am stuck on whether to go full exhaust(headers, true dual, etc) or go transmission wise with a torque converter and trans go shift kit. it's all coming eventually, just stuck on what to do first.

                      Again, thanks for the replies!

Haha, this is crazy. I never really thought about it before, because i replaced my muffler right when I got the car, but it had a crappy dual muffler already. Well, I just looked further into it and realized I have the Y87 package on my car! lol.. sweet! ;)

I've got 125000 on mine and this sucker still pulls like a mofo. I still plan on throwing more cash into mods, my next purchase is a cam and springs, hell, I might blow the engine, but thats life. My father has a 93 bonneville and a 92 lumina van, both with a 3800 series I, both have about 160k and have had no engine problems what so ever. I think the tranny will go before the engine, these engines are tough as hell.

Mod it!!, and when you start seeing serious issues w/ the engine get a rebuild kit. Have the money aside and you'll never feel guilty for trying to blow away mustangs ever again. Take a look at the supersix kit available for the 3800. Maybe an idea for you in the future.
