  • synthetic vs. high-mileage oil

i've been using mobil 1 synthetic oil (10w-30) for awhile now, but the car has 96,000 miles and i don't really race it or anything. it's a daily driver. would it be better to use the higher-mileage motor oils? besides the fact that it's not $5/quart too lol

i had used full synthetic from ~750 mi to ~45000 miles. for the last 9 thousand or so, i've used a blend. i get a few better miles to the gallon, for what that's worth.

High-mileage oil expands your seals, to prevent leaks... to the point where seals just get completely "disolved" and you have full-out leak.

Mobil 1 full synthetic is the best oil, in my opinion. Why would corvette, maseratti, viper, mercedes-benz and others recommend it and put it at the factory?

I agree with the above post. If you've been using Mobil 1, continue to use Mobil 1.

Agreement here too. I don't like high mileage oils - you're trading better sealing in the near term for a lot more seal damage in the long term. If your car isn't eating oil, stick with standard dino or synthetic. If it is, get it fixed.

There can be lots of profits in "creating" a new market segment, and convincing people that they need it.
