  • I have tried Everything NEED of HELP ! with a 2.8l V6

hey guys i need some help...i dont have a camaro but i do have a chevy 2.8l v6 thats in an 84 s10 blazer 4x4. the reason im here is cuz i did a info search and this site brought up the best info to date on the engine in the tech section...ok ill be quick..went to work fine, came out later and it would start after killing my battery my buddy came out to help and we found that the distributer was lose so after tightening it down we ended up towing it around the lot to try a pop the clutch only to have to play with the dist. to get her running. after limping it home the next day its off time again...i have put on new cap and roter, plugs and plug wires and i had replaced the ignition module about 2 years ago so it was under warrenty so i grab a new just for the heck of it, ive read the manuel and all sorts of fourums....i know that if you are looking at the engine from the front, that the #1 cylinder is on the the left in the front with 1,3 & 5 being on the left and 2,4,& 6 being on the right and the firing order is 123456. from one past experince i was told when the engine is at top dead center that the roter will point to the #1 cyl. if that is the case,i think some how the engine jumped time in a drastic way cuz at TDC the roter is pointing more like to the #4 cylinder...need help bad as ive spent 2 days trying to get her running with no luck...oh and lastly...would it be a mistake to,once the engine is at TDC to lift and try to reseat/reset the dist to the position i think it should be or would that just worsen the problem....??

    ALL Help Is appriciated...thxs W </font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;"> </pre>[/QUOTE]oody

might want to pop out the distributor & verify tds on #1 cyl. then drop distributor back in. Also, while the distributor is out, get the $.79 distributor gasket for like, an 80 sbc, to keep any possible erl leak from that location.

ok thanks will...going out to try that now....oh and this may be a stupid question but im not sure so im gonna ask any way...as far as the stoke...is there such an animal as a compression stroke? i think like when the #1 cylinder isnt fireing but would still be at TDC but the dist. would not be pointing at the #1 cylinder...thanks for the help in advance!

ok been out there for hours now and it still wont start....with a semi novice looking on we reconfirmed TDC, resat the dist., confirmed that she is getting spark...STILL wont start, not even a backfire! the only thing i can think it might be after reading the shop manual and tons of forums is either...

        1) i have a bad ECM...not sure where the heck that is as the manual continues to refer you to the dealer for that...

        OR

        2) i have the dist. (still) way off on the timing....should the dist cap #1 wire be right where the rotor points to when at TDC or should it be before or slightly after...( when at TDC the rotor points at the #1 cyl)

i know its a very simple fix and i have to be VERY VERY close.i just need a shove in the right direction..

        thanks again in advance...Woody

I seriously doubt that your ecm is dead. you might be 180* out from the tdc your looking for. try either rotating the engine again, or take the distributor out & turn it 180*. When I did my 3.4 swap, 180* out was my issue, & a quick, esy fix.
