  • leaking oil like crazy

my friend and i were racing, me in my 96 and him in his 84 z28 with 350+hp 355 sbc and because his clutch pedal is his seat right now i came close but he started bulling away as i hit fourth gear.

i was doing about 120+ and he was at aabout 135 when we both saw a BUMP sign and withing seconds slammed into the metal ramp. he flattened out his cheap sidepipe glasspacks and my suspension hit so hard I scraped almost my entire front crossmember and scraped my oil pan pretty good too.

it is right next to the oil plug but on the bottom of the pan.... a pinhole leak. i drained the oil and will clean it off when I get back. i am going to put jb weld on it after i sand the surface.

    THAT SHOULD WORK RIGHT?>????

    let the flaming begin...

    and it should hold.

I thought doing 120 on the interstate around 2-3am with no traffic was a little extreme.

I hope this isn't the same car you've already been having trouble with as described in your other thread??

how were you doin 120+ again in a car with no PCM tuning that has a limiter at 118?

oh, btw, jbweld is for cheap people who dont get stuff fixed right. do it right, get a new pan, and put a new gasket in while your at it. that would fix the problem correctly, and also give you preventative maintnence w/ the pan gasket, since being a 96 you probably leaked oil anyway somewhat from the rear main seal. do everything at once, and get it done right. jbweld is just a bad idea....

I agree with Ian. You are talking about the one of the most critical componets for your engine. How would you like to leave a trail of oil and seize the motor when the jb falls off? :(

              different car
i never had a real main seal problem
and its only a pinhole leak.

do you have to disconnect your motormounts and lift the engine etc.?

oh and the kid was so ancy to get his car back home and there was already a hole in his floor so he put a strap from his clutch fork to his seat since his slave cylinder went out(11 inch clutch and the new slave couldnt hold it or something) anyways when he pushes his seat back it disingages the clutch, clever yet really stupid I know

oh yeah and it has already been gone over my car has done 125(128) with bigger tires, but obviously the if the speedo says 125 it says 125 even if your friend is behind you with his speedo saying 128

anyways my car has hit 125 a number of times. i never messed with the computer and i dont think the first owner with the age of 85 would have either, but you never know.

also it has never cut out at 125 it just lacks the power to go any faster. i dunno maybe a factory freak or a factory error?

My car leaked oil, it was the plastic screw that hooks up the oil gauge to the oil pan.
What I got you got to get and put it in you.

i can see the leak it is right under the piece of metal the plug screws into so i know where it is at i was just curious as to whether jbweld would hold or not. i have seen people patch up bellhousings, holes in engine blocks, and those casings on dirt bikes that get screwed up when they wreck. i am going to go for it and check every day for a while and then every other day

if i have to I will change the oil pan, but until then i am going to just get by.

I'd have to say try the JB Weld first. To buy a pan, gasket, and instalation is going to get quite expensive. I know, becasue I did all three. I did the work myself, but at the shop I work at, the all-data computer system asks for 3 hours of labor to perform the job. So that is at least like $150 just for labor. Your look at like $250-$300 for everything. Also, see if maybe you could have the hole tapped and filled, and see if that works. I say this, because if the metods dont work, what would you have to do. Oh, the right, thing, so your not hurting anything by trying in my opinion. Just keep an eye on that oil pressure gauge, if you do try. ;) Good luck.

                        FIXED!!

i put some JB on the pan and gooped it on but the little bit of oil that would drip out( and i was in texas while this thing was draining) made the JB start to sag and drip. so i waited about an hour and went back and wiped off the old stuff and used a small film of it since it was sticky to stop the leak. then i took a long piece of wide clear tape and put more JB on it. then i taped it to the pan and waited a day. it dried up perfectly and because i used the tape the oil pan is flat in that spot i am and always looking at my guages put i havent lost a drop and dont think i ever will. my new motto:

If you dont have da cash, JB it.

                        thanks guys

Yeah it's ghetto but it's pretty much what JB weld was designed for. Just keep an eye on it for sure.. It may take awhile but I guarantee it will eventually start to leak again... Later
