This question is about my parents' dodge grand caravan. Apologies in advance if this isn't the right place, but I was wondering what's the legit cost for a complete transmission replacement? The auto trans on the van is totally shot, according to the dealer. I was quoted about $3700, parts and labor.
My parents want to do it, but I am leaning toward ditching the van since it's a 96 with 150,000+ miles. But it looks like my dad's gonna get it replaced. So, what do you think?

DITCH THE VAN....ive know seveal people that have owned dodge caravans and have talk with lots more people with them...they will all tell you the same thing. The A/c has been replaced several times, and the transsmission has to be replaced every 25K.

First off, a transmission shop [not the dealer] could do that job for HALF that amount. The price is totally out of line. Most transmission shops will tow a vehicle for free [hint!] with a rebuild.
Second, consider the economics of the whole deal. Let's say the repair cost $1800. Let's say a new car payment is $300/month. If the van lives w/o other problems for 6 months, you will break even financially. The longer you keep the thing running [before other major repairs] the more money you're gonna save.
