If there are 2 black wires, one white wire and one of another color, go with the white wire. 99.9% of the time, it's the data wire.

Tranny temp is actually very simple...the fittings that come with the Autometer kit will fit into the fill or drain plugs in the tranny. The sending unit fits into that...run the wires and you are finished.

So is there anyone with a 98 f-body that has installed one of these?

            from 99 manual...
tan and purple are the sensor signal and low wires going to PCM. the pink and black wires power the internal O2S heaters. tap the tan and purple or the tan/wht and purple/wht wires for O2 signal. I would tap these at the PCM input rather than along the length of wire on the harness. much easier that way. you want to be careful not to introduce any extra resistance in this circuit, however. O2 sensors produce an AC voltage in millivolts so a little resistance means a big change in what the PCM sees.
            HO2S bank 1 sensor 1: PCM pins 12 C2 and 27 C1. bank 2 sensor 1: PCM pins 29 C1 and 10 C2. C1 is blue, C2 is clear.
again this is for a 99. your results may vary. i think haynes may give you wire colors but not PCM pinouts. these are the same as the 2000 but the 1996 pinout is different at pcm. so check appropriate service information if you're tapping in at PCM. also be careful not to spread any of the PCM terminals...

no prob... gm uses the colors tan and purple for O2 sensor signal wires pretty consistently.
