My car was getting a little hotter than usual so I changed my water pump last week. Everything was good til tonight. I'm driving and noticed that it was getting a little hot again. The gauge was almost at the 3/4 line. Then i'm driving and start hearing a loud metal knocking/grinding noise. What could the problem be? I checked my coolant, and it was hot. Had some smoke comming from somewhere when I checked under the hood. You can tell the Motor was hot. The grinding noise was only during idle in gear. As soon as i put it in N, it stopped. Then while in park, the rmp's were jumping like crazy. Could someone tell me what's wrong or what could I do?

Check your oil. I say that, because I had a car (305) burn up all the oil, and spin two bearings. I'm thinking that you might have done that, or something similar, caused by oil starvation.
The water would be hot because of the friction, and no lubrication. The smoke is probably coming from the valve covers, check there.
I would guess that at this point, with that much noise, the motor's had it. If you drive it much more, it may very well seize up. Good luck with it.Wife and a dog, they both think they\'re Kujo.

1999 3.8 A4 Y87
Navy Blue Metallic
BFG G-Force KDWS 275/40/17s,
WS6 Wheels (17x9)
Phoenix Transmissions 2400 Stall Converter
FRA, Holley Powershot filter, Whisper Lid, Ported Throttlebody
2000 manifolds, Flowmaster, WS6 Tail Pipes,
MSD 8.5mm Wires, MSD Coils, Autolite plugs
Performance Cryogenics treated rotors
1LE Sway Bars and panhard rod, 1LE front springs w/SLP Bilsteins, stock rear springs w/ 3rd Gen Bilsteins, BMR STB, KBDD SFCs, 1LE rear lower control arms, 1LE front lower control arms
1968 Chevelle Malibu 327 TH350
