• Security System - Universal Sensors

I just realized my car has a security system on it (aftermarket i'm assuming). I found a sensor nearby to where the monsoon amp is (passengers back fender where the spare is and stuff).

The only problem is that this is the only sensor i've been able to find (1 sensor on the back passenger wheel well doesn't do very much security wise). I was wondering if they sell generic/universal sensors that I could add-on to my security system on the car, and what i'd have to do to do this if it is possible.

    Thanks in advance guys

That's the stock alarm system, not an aftermarket one. If you want you can crank the sensitivity up on the sensor by turning it clockwise. I have mine on max (doesn't go off too easy still). As for more sensors, I don't know about that. You should post this in the Stereo/Electronics forum.

I've seen come generic/universal sensors on e-bay but i'm wondering if they actually work. (the whole reason for posting )

thanks for the info on how to crank up the sensitivity though. I'll have to check that out after I get outta here (work)

as for the posting in the electronics forum, yeah.. i didn't snap until I had already posted. I'm just waiting for a mod to move it there.

I just added the DEI 508D proximity sensor to my stock alarm (pics should be coming soon). I got in on a GP on ls1.com and it was only like 40 bucks. I tapped it into the stock shock sensor that you found. When you get close to the car the horn will honk twice as a warn away signal. Then if they manage to get in the car it will go off full blast. Great for t-tops, convertibles, or if you leave your windows down alot(me). I have an inline switch on it so I can turn the senosr on/off when I want to. That way it wont go of when Im at college or in a parking lot. Most aftermarket sensors will work as an add on to our stock alarm. You can get a better shock sensor if you like. Or you can also add remote-start, window roll up or what ever your creative mind desires. :D

sounds good. i should be able to find some stuff @ Crutchfield.com or the local Audio Express place here.

what i'm kind of worried about is power and wiring, is it that big of a deal?

Just find out if the stock system is closed loop or open loop. If you know that, you can add any kind of accessory you want. (providing it's the same!)

I don't know why a sensor would need power, but if that is the case, just remember to use the appropriate wire size for the amperage draw and fuse it as well.

The DEI 508D did need a power and ground connection to turn it on. The stock sensor also has a power and ground connection if you look at it. Also there are LED's on the 508D that need power to turn on. I tapped into my cig. lighter wire because it is a constant 12V source. If you get the 508D you can extend all of the wires and tap them into the stock shock sensor. But you must cross the colors for the 1st and 2nd stage. Instead of hooking the green to green and blue to blue it goes blue(dei)-green(stock) and green (dei)-blue(stock). If you dont do this the alarm will sound full blast instead of giving a warn away when someone gets close.

How well did the DEI sensor work when you tried it out?

The DEI 508D works great for me. Does exactly what it is supposed to do. It has two knobs on it so that you can adjust the range of the sensor. Luckily mine came pretty much tuned perfectly for my car so I didnt have to mess with the settings. You have to get almost up to the glass of the door before it goes off. I like it so far.
