  • Windshield Wipers turn off in the UP position!

This is annoying as all hell!

One day as the rain lightened I turned my windshield wipers off. Instead of dropping down the 2" or so into the OFF position they went all the way to the top--and stayed there! Now any time they're off they're up: both blocking my view and looking stupid as heck. They work just fine when I turn them on, they go to the bottom and then from there begin to wipe. But when that switch turns to the OFF position again, they go up and stay there.

The only way I can keep them down while I'm driving is to pull out the fuse when they're ON but in the down position in between wipes.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this???

Looking in my handy-dandy 1996 GM Service Manual, the one problem that is somewhat near what you are describing says:
Wipers Stop Randomly and do not park when switch is moved to "OFF"
Both problems say to check the Wiper Motor Cover Assembly with a voltometer.
If readings are less than 1 volt, then replace.
The picture shows the location on top of the wiper motor (hence the name...duh) with 3 screws and a 5 connector plug attaching to it.

I'll keep looking to see if I can get any further in the diagnosis, but I hope this helps...

Get a used one from a j-yard or get yours rebuilt. You DON'T want to know how much GM will rape you for a new motor, but I'll tell you anyway. They are over $300 new

        Part #'s are
        93-95 12367254 -cost's over $310
        96-00 12363316 -cost's over $340
