  • Squeaky Alternator

My 94 Firebird has a somewhat loud squeak coming from what i think is the alternator. Its pretty annoying and i was wondering how u would fix it.
My car has 94,000 miles on it.

Does it fluctuate with engine speeds? If so, its going bad. Start looking for a new one. Are you sure its not just the belt squeaking?

Yeah, trust me. Don't let it go bad. I was on my way back from a 45 mile trip when mine died... battery died and i had to push my car to a friends house( i made it to his road and it died) Mine cost me about 80 and i put it on myself. Go to O'Reilly's and trade your old one in and get a rebuilt one.

Before you just swap out the alternator, get it tested. It could be something as simple as a serpentine belt that needs replacing.

Thanks for the help. My dad said that my belts needed replaced soon. Would that cause the noise it sounds like an internal bearing from the alternator is going out.

Absolutely. A belt squeak is annoying as hell and can easily sound like a bad bearing.

Just don't have it tested at Advanced Auto.I bought an alternator there (I went through several that day trying to find a good one), but when I installed it on my car, it wasn't charging. It was installed right, but they brought out their tester and he said that it wasn't charging right. But then they took it inside and put it on a different machine, and it said that it was charging right. Too much hassle, avoid Advance for alternators if you can. I change the Alt 9 times in one day trying to get one that worked right and didn't whine. Still never solved the whine, but I the belt was brand new, that was the first thing I changed. Might be the power steering pump making racket too. Who knows, good luck man.

I agree, go to O'reileys. They got it right on the first time for me.
