I have a 97 5 speed with 46000 miles on it. Heres the problem when u push the gas pedal down all the way i get jerking acceleartion and sometimes a popping sound from the front left part of the engine bay. i fi jsut slightly push the pedal down everythign is fine. I have no service engine lights and nothing seems to be wrogn unless i push the pedal down all the way. Any ideas what it could be?

I would check your wires and coils, I had similar problems both with a plug wire being fried and later with a bad ignition coil. And if you absolutely must drive it don't get on it too much. Don't drive it if you can help it though.

thanks. seems like it gets worse after a few minutes of driving. 1 st gear doesnt seem bad at all but gets worse as i go up in gears.

This is SO weird. I'm having the EXACT same problem. My #3 wire was bad, so that was part of the problem, but strangely, that popping sound coming from the front passenger side started before the #3 plug wire problem, and still happens.

Yeah, get the shop to check out your coil packs and wires. Also be aware of what RPM your car idles...it should range normally between 600-800, if it's below that or if it fluctuates too much you might have a cylinder misfire.

I had similar problems with my engine last year, and it turned out that my fourth and sixth cylinder were misfiring (this of course led to other problems like not being able to get past 60)...fortunately, I was able to get it fixed, retuned and it was basically taken apart and put back together with new coil packs and wires.

Just an idea, I'm nothing close to a real gearhead, but just sharing my experience with similar problem.
