this is actually not my car
    it is in a 1996 3.8 Camaro
I will copy the IM conversation ok?
    :edited for reading purposes:
I’m going to check the coolant again today. I think it might be the MAF sensor. The car use to idle high like a year ago, and now it’s starting to do it again. If I’m driving it’s in good shape, but at a red light or parking, its heats up fast. Like yesterday it was pretty high, when I shut it off ran in the house for like 10 minutes came out and started it up the car revved by itself twice to the 1500 rpm mark then shut off. had to restart it put it in reverse back out fast and speed up a little bit to give it some air, I have no idea what it could be, I’m taking it up to the dealership Monday, I didn’t see any signs of leak. I’m going to check the level in a min, but it was above the required line after I filled it up yesterday and is still acting up.

i'm leaning towards the water pump. I dont know how the maf sensor would cause the car to heat up. Are the fans kicking on when they need to?

well small update for the question on the fans...
I ran it around didnt give me much problem still warmed up. I let it run 10 min in the driveway it started to heat up, then i turned it off and on and it heated up and it slightly reved very little. When I turned it back it sounded like the fans kicked on and it cooled down a bit.

I had the same exact issues with my 97. After changing out the thermostat twice and flushing the coolant, the car still overheated badly. Come to find out it was a blown gasket and then shortly after that the oil pump went out and right now I'm waiting on a new engine. Hope your situation goes better. Good luck!

I had a similar problem. My 3rd gen 2.8 overheated in line at the dmv the day i got it. The fan motor burned out and fried a relay. Sit there and watch for the fans to come on.if they don't, find the relay for the fan and bypass it with a paper clip or something and put voltage to the fan motor to see if it actually works. You wouldnt be able to drive your car at all even at high speed since there is no coolant circulation at all. i was able to drive my car back and forth to school and stuff with no issue since there is no stopping. It ran cool at highway speeds. after that issue was solved, i was fooled into thinking my car was overheating when the temp guage sender magically unplugged itself....
