  • Convertible Top Cleaner

I have a 95 Firebird Convertible with a white vinyl top. Well after all the bird droppings and dirt it is almost black. If anyone can help me out and give me a brand name that is sure to work, I would appreciate it. I've tried *Blue Magic Convertible Top Cleaner*, and it does absolutely nothing. Thank you. By the way, does anyone know if bleach will harm it? I really dont think it will hurt. Some people say it does, and some say it doesn't.

I am not sure about the white tops, are they vinyl covered? I know my black one is canvas and there is not cleaner for it.....I use the same soap as I was my car with and use a soft brush....but there are no "cleaners" per se.

I've seen people recommend RaggTopp, 303, and Mother's. No personal experience.

You can Google groups for lots of opinions.

Under no circumstances would I use bleach. It oxidizes stuff, like your fabric.

        Hi
I don't personally have a convertable, but I do have six kids that can be as bad as birds when it comes to making a royal mess. I have found a granulated product called "Oxy-clean" that works wonders on almost any surface. It has much of the same cleaning properties of bleach without the harsh chlorine results. It has been sold on TV for years and is now available at any Wal-Mart.
You might test it on an inconspicuous area to see how it works. I know its the bomb on mildew and most stains. You just mix it with hot water and go. Someone else might have some better suggestions so I'll clear the floor.

I was also considering RaggTopp, 303, and Mother's. I think they are the most popular, so if anyone has used any of these, please reply.

            Re: Convertible Top Cleaner

I know I'm way late to the party here, but I used to have a Cavalier convertible with a white top. I used 303 and it worked GREAT. Make sure to use the protectant afterwards to waterproof it better.

Hope this helps someone out there...

              Re: Convertible Top Cleaner

I've heard of people using meguiar's cleaner and protectant from their boat line. I've never used it so I can't say one way or the other, but that another option for you to look into.

As far as I'm concerned 303 is the greatest thing ever. I use it on my interior, wheels, and fiberglass on boats. Doesn't help you, but I love the stuff.

                  Re: Convertible Top Cleaner

I would higly recommend just using a mild soap. I know it looks bad, but a strong detergent will only deteriorate the vinyl, and oxidating cleaners will weaken the fabric that is laminated to the plastic. Cleaners will work wonders, but just remember that the better they are working, the more harm they are doing. Would you rather have a leaking torn top, or one that looks weathered?
