• Cannot Pinpoint Problem

Im still getting whine, after throwing a new alternator on and new idler pully. The engine is just loud period. THe noise seems to be centered on the engine (the whine that is). The crankshaft area also makes some noise. We have a water pump and power steering pump, but honestly the noise doesnt seem to be coming from that area. The whine annoys me the most, but the rattle ticking noises do as well. Anyone have any ideas?

your timing chain?

on my car its the torque converter that whines. it sounds really bad sometimes. between 2000 and 4500 rpm.

help us help you by telling what kind of whine it is and in detail what it sounds like(even though that may be hard) then tell us where you think it is coming from.

put the car up on jackstands and while it is running go underneath and listen carefully

You can here the whine at idle on this clip when the car is fired up. It get way worse when reved. It is not present with the serpentine belt removed. The idler pulley and the PULLEY on the tensioner have been replaced (the tensioner has NOT. I have a stehescope (automotive) and dont get any akward sounding noises. Thanks for the reply.

Steering pump? I killed my steering pump and it sounded almost like blower whine. I would try that.

I agree with 38fury. When a steering pump is about to go, it will whine.

I could not hear a whine in the clip you posted.

Belt tensioner bearing maybe?

My engine used to whine a bit. Then I blew a hose in my power steering line and the belts flung p/s fluid all over the front of the engine. Lubed all the pulleys and stuff up real good. No more whine

Imthe clip you can only hear it when it is started it spins up then goes away. I am going to get a clip under load. The power steering fluid was black and smelt burnt, but I was told if I flushed it and put new in the sound would go away. The noise doesnt seem to be coming from the PSP side of then engine though. Also I replaced the pulley on the tensioner. Is there something else in the tensioner that might be messed up? Thanks for the replies I appreciate it.

My engine (3.8), also whines. Except however...my sounds much like a turbo whine, and i like it. Everyone that rides in my car with me asks, "does this thing have a turbo?!" LOL Nope. Mine only whines under acceleration from about 2000-4000 or so. It sounds sweet

i would take off the belt and manually move all the pulleys and see if you can pinpoint if theres a sound coming thru one of the pulleys...might be a dry bearing or something

if tha fails, maybe tighten all your pulleys, make sure none are loose or wobbly, and throw on a gaterback belt on there..
out of ideas

My 96 sounds a little like this ... I just ignore the whine. In all honesty, I don't think its a serious problem.

my car has olways sounded like this. I think it is the whistle of your pulleys turning air or air going into your intake.

pull your belt off and see what happens.

just live with it, its better that it has a tiny whine to dround out the injector sounds and minor exhaust leaks.

The noise goes away with the belt off. I put a stethescope on the psp and got a little higher pitched noise then everywhere else im going to replace that and see what happens

Sounds like a plan, someone from this site had a faulty PSP even thogh he would add fluid flush out the system, it still gave him trouble, now regardless his PSP whines. it could very well be a dry bearing
good luck
