I've been told that the pcm limits top speed by
cutting power to the fuel pump intermittently.
if this is true, could the governor be defeated
by adding an alternate source of power to the
fuel pump, ie with a toggle switch??
On the 99+ cars the electronic throttle body is literally pulled back. No matter how hard you press the pedal (which controls a potentiometer) the PCM simply scales back the throttle to 118 [img]smile.gif[/img]
What are "pulse widths"? I thought only the
fuel pressure regulator controled fuel pressure
after the engine starts.
my idea is to throw the switch only after about
100 M.P.H.(or use a WOT switch)
what do you think ? could this work ?
I have a 2002.. and have no problem getting to 120.. it even climbs a little passed.. i usually slow down right when i get to 120 cause of upcoming cars or something

I've driven in my friend's 3.4L where he floored it from 60MPH and I must say I don't see it venturing much farther from it's governor. I'd say about 120-122MPH.
As for the 3.8L, I would say it would die out at around 128-130MPH.
Yes yes yes I know someone said it could do 145/148 or something, but that's w/o air resistance and that's where it would redline in 4th gear. There's no way in hell it would get anywhere near that IMO.
Ok, if it redlines in 4th why not just put it into overdrive? I think it would go way faster than 128-130, especially with 3.08 gear differential. BTW Dominic: what does your car top out at? Have you tested it?

It takes some time, but 136mph (220kmh) on a flat road is possible, downhill even more. (My speedo needle won´t go past 220, but rpms are still climbing...)
I've got the HPP3 and the 155mph gauge cluster and it's easy to get to 135mph no problem, but from 135-140 it takes a good 15 secs or so just to climb that much higher, on a perfectly flat interstate highway. 140mph is the fastest i've had my car, and 5th gear is too high to even pull the car any faster, the only way is to raise the rev limiter or put in lower gears in the rear. this way u can use 5th and have great bottom end power and probably higher top speeds with the "added" torque u'll get from the gears. I think lower gears are the key to higher top speeds, that and more engine mods :D .

How did you get the 155mph gauge cluster to hook up and work? I would like to change mine out but the difference in the oil pressure gauge and tach makes me wonder if its possible. Where did you get yours?

Yes it should work. I thought a lot about this when I had my V6. just make a switch that hijacks the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) signal and sends one equivalent to 100mph or so.
According to the info I have, the VSS puts out:
...4000 pulse per mile wire, dk grn/wht pin 28 black connector v6, pin 8 black connector v8.
ppl wire from vss, pin 29 black connector v6, pin 31 red connector v8
yel wire from vss, pin 30 black connector v6, pin 32 red connector v8
But I have no idea how accurate that info is or how the 4000 pulse per mile figure will change with gear ratios.
But assuming 4000pulses per mile is correct, you would need a 111.1Hz signal to simulate 100mph. Which can be done with about $2 worth of parts.
I’ll have to hook an oscilloscope to it to make sure though. And you won’t know how fast you are going. Your speedo’ will just read 100mph.
