• oil leak question from plug?

Hey guys this is a weird question I guess.

I had my car's drippy drain plug fixed, didn't notice any leaks or anything, looks good to me.

BUT When I went under the hood the monkey's forgot to put the oil filler plug in the hole (where you pour the oil in) and luckliy I found it and put it in.

I am wondering, does that plug have any affect on the pressures in the engine, or is just bascily a plug so dirt doesn't get in there etc?

I just want to know if by plugging that cap back on if it is gonna create some kind of messed up pressure and cause my drain nut to leak again, or if I am fine and it would have not leaked with the cap on or the cap off? It is more like a plug. I pray you figure out what I am talking about.
Chris.

Well, did it start leaking again or not? There's your answer.

I don't really know for sure. But I think that it will be the same with the cap on there as far as that's concerned.

put it back on and you will be fine- unless a squirl crawled in there and died :D i have seen ghetto fabulous people put rags in there just to keep the dirt out. you'll be fine.

Chris,
Not a problem. Everything should be fine especially if it was only a short period of time.

Yeah, it wasn't off for long. I put it back on and haven't noticed anything different, I just didn't know if it effected anything with pressures inside the engine etc...

Also are the valve covers bad for leaking or do I need to attempt to tighten them up?

normally, your block will develop some positive pressure (due to blow-by) so running w/o the oil filler cap shouldnt suck in any dirt. however, you would fail emissions since the pcv system wouldnt get to suck up all those evil blow-by gases. but its a good idea to have it in place during operation!

if your valve covers are leaking i would first replace the pcv valve. it might be blocked, and if you get enough pressure in the valve covers it can blow oil out through the gaskets. usually if they are leaking though you will need to replace them. tightening rarely helps on old gaskets.
