Turning heat on to prevent overheating?

Yes it also helps to cool the car faster when in the staging lanes ;)

The heater core draws heat from the coolant so if you pull heat our of the coolant then you have cooler coolant flowing through the engine so .... yes it does help.

Shane - just make sure you use defrost because it makes the fans kick on as well. ;)

I disagree. Even if the gauge is far into the red, running the heater on high will bring it down some.

it does help alot accually... i use that trick when 4 wheeling in the desert. helps alot in stop and go traffic especially

I was just messing around in traffic one day with that. I watched my temp gauge drop from the 200-220 range to about 180-190.
