  • Emissions 8 year/80,000 mile warranty

It seems my cat converter is on the way out. I recently learned that these items are covered by all auto manufacturers under a federal law for 8 years and 80,000 miles. I have about a year left, so I want to know if anyone has taken their car to the dealer and successfully had their converter replaced for free. What is the check out procedure, and how hard was it to get the dealer to pay for it? Any info is greatly appreciated.

It is definitely true...it's federal law and can be found on the EPA website.

To clarify, it's 8 years or 80,000 whichever comes first. So your 96 has probably expired already. The date starts from the build date on the sticker on the driver's door.

i had mine go bad 2 times. The last time my 3 year warranty had expired. I asked them when they put the new one on what kind of warranty and they said it was still under the original 8 yr warranty.

It should be no problem, but they will prolly say that if it is the cat it is free, if it turns out not to be they will charge you for a service fee. A lot of people dont know (i didnt til i had it done) that because of the 8 yr warranty exhaust shops arent allowed to touch a cat until after the warranty expires. 99% will replace it, but they risk a fine for doing so.

Yes, the 8 yr/80,000 warranty is absolutely true. As mentioned above you can find it on the EPA website.

My stock cat was pretty well disentegrated and I took it to the dealer and they said it needed a new cat and said it was covered under the 8/80,000 warranty. No problems at all. (Although I ended up getting a high flow cat instead of taking it back to the dealer).

Ok, so if for some reason I am wrong, and the cat is fine, I risk being charged 60 bucks or so for having it checked out. I might wait a while then until it is really bad. I still have almost 2 years and 15K to go.

I just brought my car down to the dealer today for that. The car was idling rough, back firing, and it used a 1/4 tank to get to the dealer.I give you an update on how it goes on monday, thats the only time they have open. I think they have to replace the y pipe, since it one big piece too. Reminds me, I need to go and cover the car. Craig

That's another reason I want to get it done free...the new cat comes with a new y-pipe since it's all one welded unit from the factory. That way I can avoid that rattle too and it can all be free!
