  • Coil Pack Fried :(

Well make a long story short...I didn't want to take my car to the dealership but I did anyways.

Results after having massive hesitation with SES light they told me my #3 and #6 cylinders were misfiring and they are going to replace the coil packs here as long as change my wires. DON'T ask about the cost.

My question is however, how the #*#($ do coil packs go? They said the part was rusted. Well we'll see because I'm going to request to see the old parts before I sign off on anything.
Those mother f*ckers!!

Rusted coil pack? Orobably it oxidized a little and the terminals just needed cleaning... not actual replacement. Either way GM labor sucks.

coil packs are like 50 a piece at the dealership, personally I would have said thank you but no thank you.. at least that's what I paid for 1 a year ago.. needed one and they were the only place with one in stock in town.. auctually a few dollars cheaper than the same coil at napa..

same part at autozone is 31 a piece.. my store doesn't carry them in stock of course..

well I got the car back and it runs fine now.

Only problem I had when I started the car the second time it just make a grr...and silence. I was like uh---wtf? I start it up again and it comes on and it says fuel tank E and all the guages spike to max (125MPH/7000RPMs) and they all fall back and my trip meter was reset to 0 and the clock said 12:00...

I pull the car into my parking lot and I turned off and started the car again about 15 times and it never happened again. I'm confused yet worried. Oh well...d*mn F-body

well im not sure why you had a problem starting your car afterwards. but they have to disconnect the battery to change the coils. otherwise they would take a chance on frying one of the new ones. that explains why everything was reset on you car.

actually the clock and radio were set properly when I got the car. It was AFTER I turned the car off and decided to restart it is when it reset itself...I'm stumped...

                AHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It's doing it NOW EVERYTIME I start the car. Car dies on the crank over and then out of some miracle it starts...trip meter resets to 0 and all the gauges jump around and then it settles in.

Someone is going to die tomorrow...someone care to enlighten me as to WTF this is? I'm going over to the dealership first thing tomorrow. No one messes with an Italina mofo like me!

The stock coil packs have aluminum posts on them. The aluminum is really soft (relatively speaking), and will corrode easily, and once the corrosion starts, it will eat away the post pretty quick. On my 95, I put Accel wires on my stock coils (Accel wires use brass connections), and they started corroding the posts (electrolytic corrosion), I had to clean them regularly. After a while, one of the posts lost so much material that the wire wouldn't lock onto it anymore.
