  • Can older 700r4 be used with late 3.8? Transfer Case compatibility?

I am building a custom 4x4 Volvo 245. I want to use a 1995 to 1998 3.8 V6. I am wondering what compatibility issues I would encounter by using an older 700r4. It seems that I can get a 700r4 pretty cheap compared to a 4L60E. If I do go with a 700r4 can I use the 3.8 computer? Also, are there any issues with removing the tailshaft housing on either a Camaro 700R4 or 4L60E to install a transfer case? I already have a 1986 S10 Blazer with a 2.8 but a bad 700r4. I plan to use its transfer case.

they will bolt up, but the wiring harnesses are completely different. Also, starters will be on different sides.

Can an older trans be made to work, though? Does a 700R4 have the right connector/solenoieds, etc. so that it can be operated by a 4L60E computer? Also, since the starter bolts to the engine that is not a problem, is it?

        No, it won't work.

If the connections are different, then the solenoids are different. The starter is on the opposite side, it can't be relocated unless you install an engine to accommodate.

^^ the owner of an 84 camaro that did the 3800 swap before I did the 3800 & 7004r did some mods to make it work.

Hockeyman, are you saying that a driver's side starter engine will only work with a driver's side starter trans?

            3.4,
That link seems to be about a terrorist video. What year 700 did you mate to your 3.8? Is your 3.8 an SII?

Thanks. Do you know if you can put a transfer case on a 3.8 Camaro 4L60E?

conjectior: yes/no. dependsd on teh output housing bolt pattern. I know on the later yrs tranny w/the removable bellhousing the output housing was redesigned for just such ideas. Might want to do a search/research on them.
