I have noticed over time that this problem has gotten worse, and the last couple of weeks i have really been able to notice it. While im driving my 1996 firebird, i have it cruizing at about 40mph while in fourth gear, that puts it at about 1800 rpm's. Now if i give it about a 1/2 throtte my car starts to shake and act like it is misfiring, and then i get a loud backfire out of the rear. I have noticed that in other gears, mainly 3rd though, that it does this too, under a heavier accel.
I have no clue what this could be but it has me worried.

i had the same problem in my 97. it was bad wires and plugs. put some accel wires and bosch +4's and it took care of the problem.
