I started my car this morning and it sounded like it was running on four cylinders. the ses light started flashing and the car felt very sluggish. after about half a mile the misfire suddenly stops and the ses light has stopped flashing and is just on. I take it to autozone and they tell me it was cylinder five misfire. there is no way that only one cylinder was misfiring. I think 1 of my coil packs is bad. the ses light came back on after the code was cleared what do you guys think.

A bad coil would make 2 cylinders miss (your right about that). So it has to be something else that would make just that one cylinder miss. Could be a spark plug, a spark plug wire, bad wire connections to the coil or spark plug. Any other ideas guys??
well first of all, one cylinder could misfire. its happening on mine and has happened before.
funny thing is, the misfire could be on the opposite side. my first problem with that was number five misfire and the cause of that was a bad plug wire on the opposite side. after replacing the wires it fixed that issue. right now im having a issue that sounds like what your experiencing but has not been fixed by the mechanic yet. replaced all coil packs, wires, and plugs but not fixed yet and no ideas yet either

I had a single cylinder misfire after I replaced my entire ignition system. It turned out that one of the wires was too close to the header and it was invisibly arcing to the header.
Before that, I had a multiple random misfire, which was the control module's doing. But, if it says cylinder five, why not just put a new plug and wire on cylinder five?
Also, did you know that autozone will test your coils for free as long as you pull them off, so if you suspect that, get it checked.

Nope. I had bad coil, only cylinder 5 was missing. Replaced the coil - all cool.
