  • Just a warning on alarm installs.

About 5 months ago my brother got an alarm installed in his 97 firebird there. Well the other day he's driving and he feels that the carpet is wet. In the front and the backseat. So he tears the carpet back and sees that it is completely soaked..the underlay is completely wet with an inch of water under it. At this point we had no clue how this happended.

So we start investigating what could of happended, it couldn't of been the firewall hole for the stereo, cause he's had that for 5 years. Then we started wondering....how the hell did it get to the back seat. Well he goes to school in bcit and only thing we can think of is that when going up big hills the water moved over to the rear. The damage even soaked up the underlay onto the passenger side. It was just a mess, it stinks, the carpet is soaked...who knows how long the water has been going in for. So then we check the wire for the alarm install. Right off the bat we see that the hole was cut into the stupidist place. Right in the channel wear water filters down through the hood. The hole was siliconed, but it didn't last. To test the theory, I turned on the hose lightly and sure enough, here comes the water into the interior.

So I got the delearship to fax me over a repair estimate on the damage...new carpet, new underlay and labour. The parts...the carpet and underlay is $900.00 bucks, labour at 7 hours is $658.00. Total prince with including tax $1,812.54. This is one time that I'm glad the dealership charges an arm and a leg for this stuff....cause I'm going to take this with me tomorrow and demand they pay for this bill. I'm going to go for a total replacement of the carpet because I dont want that old one in there, the car is easily going to fog up with that old carpet in there, nevermind the mildew and smell. The underlay we tore out just is completely in pieces and is just a mess. I'm also going to get the money back for the install because paying for this is just ridicolous, plus the time that we spent on cleaning it up was quite the while too. Hell, i might as well go for everything and get the money back for the alarm. Worth a try.

But anyways...I just wanted to warn you guys about this in case you ever go to get an alarm done, make sure where they drill through the firewall

Sorry to hear that. Always make sure that the place where you get an alarm installed doesn't suck....Any place with half a brain wouldn't drill our firewalls for anything, it's too easy to use a grommet.
