Well, i just got a new A/C compressor put on last night and drove it around for about 10 min. After about 2 min. of driving, all of a sudden, a check gages light comes on, and i look, and the voltage meter is in the red zone on the first mark past 8 and my oil pressure was at the third mark, the on before 80. Then, a few minutes later, a ABS INOP light comes on. And then today, on the way home from school, my speedometer was going crazy!! It was going all the way past 110 as far as it would go. Then, it would bouce back, then go all the way past 110 again. Then, a SES light came on, and the engine had a surging idle, I barely had any power. Then, I am almost home, and the voltage is dropping. It is now at the very bottom mark and the car just died. I called up a friend and he came and jump started it and I drove it home. It shut off just as I pulled next to my house. I have no clue what is going on!!! First I needed a new radiator like last week. Then a new A/C hose. Then a new A/C compressor. Now this!! Oh, by the way, I have a 94 Camaro with 170,000 miles! Thanx in advance! Teele.

Do a search on the board for alternator. You just described what a few people have posted before.

I took out the battery and I am chargin it right now. I am going to put it back in and see what the problem is once it is charged back up. Is there a way to test the alternator? A guy I know said there is a magnet at the back of the alternator, and if you touch it with a screw driver and it clings to it, it is working. But i have no idea if it is true. Please help!! Thanx. Teele.

you can take the Atl out and just take it to an auto part store and see if they can test it for you. Most can do this, call around. A lot of shops offer a trade for Alt's. you give then your old one and they knock off half the price of a new or rebuilt one. The rebuilts are just as good as the new ones are. New parts are put in and the only thing old is the shell and maybe a little more but nothing big. I had a friend who used to rebuild then for his dads shop. should set you back about $60.White 98 Camaro with t-tops leather and Y87. For more info on mods just ask.
1/4=14.9
2002 Xterra V6 A4

Well, I put the battery back in the car, and started it up. I let it run for 5 min. and I took off the positive cable from the battery and it shut right off, so I went to the parts store and bought an alternator. It was $93 with a $40 core charge. I will put it in tomorrow and see what happens. Thanx for all the help! Teele.
