• Cluster swap

I'm planning on swapping to the T/A instrument cluster in the near future, and I know that the speedo is self-adjusting and to use the original odometer. I was wondering if someone who has done this could give me a detailed explanation on how to swap the resistor to make the tach accurate?

Just buy the Dakota Digital tach adjuster..

      http://www.dakotadigital.com/Detail....rtNumber=SGI-8

It has a bunch of different settings to adjust the tach.

does this tach adjuster have to stay connected to the car, or is it a one time deal and don't need to leave it connected?

You have to leave it connected. But you can mount it under the hood, or other places out of site.

It can be put under the passenger side dash....There is a nice place to splice into the tach signal down there.

The odometer will display the milage on the cluster that is being swapped in, the computer will not adjust it. I've also tried swapping the LCD unit from one cluster to the other and it will not change it. The milage is hard-coded in the cluster and it is expensive to change. I'm waiting for about 10,000 miles before I swap my Z28 cluster in. ;)

That is only true for some years....I swapped my odometer display and it was fine.

does anyone have the info on exactly what resistor needs to be swapped....?

I have an 160mph cluster from a 97z28 that i'd like to put in my 97rs, but I want the tach to be accurate...I don't mind soldering, but I have to know what to solder first, as I would rather not spend $80+ on a tach adjuster if I don't have to.

I've tried that question too. It seems a lot of people know "of" that resistor, but few know "about" it. Oh well.

I have an unused tach adapter for $60 shipped in the for sale forum....

I was unable to find any resistor on my cluster to be changed.

Now that I'm swapping an LS1 into the car, the tach is not going to be an issue. :D

i put a z28 cluster in my car from a 00-02 z28 that only had 20,000 miles on it. I knew the tach was going to be off, but it doesnt really seem that far off. Anyone know how far your tach is off, if you swap em out w/o recalibrating?

I've heard some say it would be off 25%, because that's how much cylinder reduction you have, going from 8 to 6.

theres no way the difference is that much, you cant even tell a diffence by looking at the way the guage reacts while driving. for instance, while driving at 75mph w/ 3.42 gears, my tach says im doing about 2400-2500 rpms. that about what it showed on my old tach!

It's about 350-400 rpm's too low. On a side note, the tach lag isnt as bad with a Z28 cluster.
