  • Fuel Pump Question

OK this may sound stupid but my car is screwed up and I can't remember. Does the fuel pump come on EVERY time you turn the key to the on position without starting it? My car has been acting up for a while where I start it up fine the first time usually but not always, cut it off, then come back 15 minutes later and it will either not start or it'll start and immediately die like its starved for gas. The fuel pump doesn't turn on til I turn the key to the on position like 3 or 4 times. Once I hear it engage it usually starts right up.

I don't know if its the fuel pump going bad because it never dies while i'm driving, just when I'm trying to start it. Don't know what else it could be. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to share because I have no idea. Its a 2000 auto firebird with 57,000 miles and I've already changed the fuel filter and that did nothing sadly and its been doing this for about 6 months. Every time I take it in to get it fixed, it stops doing it and they can't find a thing wrong with it because the problem is intermitent.

Yea, you should hear the fuel pump turn on every time you turn the ignition to the on position. Sounds more like a bad wiring connection if it happens intermitently. I hope for your sake it is just a wiring problem, because a new fuel pump with installation is very expensive. Trust me, I know, mine went bad. :( You can maybe have your fuel pressure checked, because if its low, than you know it is your pump acting up.
