• Please help, car stutters under acceleration

whenever i am accelerating my car stutters and jerks around and the check engine light comes on and it loses lots of power, like it feels like a 110 horsepower car for example, but then when i shift into another gear it is ok untill i try to accelerate. has anyone else had this problem, does anyone know what i can do?

thanks - brandon

Sounds like what i went through with my Firebird. If you have an Autozone nearby stop there and have them test your car. If you get a code that says misfire in any cylinder, it would be your plug wires. After reading alot about my car it seems that these F bodies are kinda notorious for having plug wires go bad with a little help from the exhaust manifold. They may appear to be in good shape, as mine did. But theres only 1 way to really find out.

Does it flash?

Scan codes, most likely it's a misfire. Search forums, plenty of info.

The SES light flashes when you have multiple misfires. I was lucky when it happened to me. I was just dumb and didnt plug in one of my plugs all the way.

Sounds like you have an ignition problem. A wire could be arcing.

If not misfiring from wires and / or plugs could also be the coil packs ( replaced all of these at around 100k miles)

check your exhaust!

i had the SAME EXACT problem on my old camaro and my cat was clogged... i went out and bought a new exhaust system (cat back + new cat) and didn't have a hint of the same problem again!!

I had the same prob.I found 2 wires arching.
Look at the engine at night runin, and you can find every arc easy.

I just had the exact same problem 2 days ago.

Was the SES light flashing?

I found out I had a melted wire.
