  • Proof of royal purple hp and tq gains with in.

I've always heard it but never proof.
I've wanted to do it but I'm skeptical.
In Hot Rod august 2002 issue on page 63 they dyno it.
    65 mercury comet
    347 ci backed up by a world class t 5 and 4 11's in a 9 inch rear.
    1st dyno
    20 w 50 oil
    dextron 3 tranny
    75 w 90 gear
    408.3 hp
    405.1 tq
    2nd dyno
    royal purple fluids:
    7 quarts 20 w 50 syn oil
    6 quarts max atf
    2.5 quarts of max gear 75 w 90
5 mile drive to get fluids up to similar temp just like dyno 1
    418.4 hp
    411.2 tq
    Horsepower Torque
    Dyno 1 408.3 405.1
    Dyno 2 418.4 411.2

Gained 10.1 hp and 6.1 tq
Sure it is not a lot but it is a hp and tq gain.
But for someone who was trying to break into, lets say for the hell of it, the 11's it might be a well worth mod.
For a bone stock v6 it is probably not worth it

I recommend however you think about more than just horsepower when it comes to your motor oil. I have been doing a ton of research lately about oils and found the royal purple thins out very quickly in comparison with many other oils. Thinner oils will allow you to make more horsepower, but they won't protect nearly as well!

Redline, Mobil1, Valvoline, not RP. Read LS1.com about RP, also check out http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

ya, i saw that article you are talking about, only i saw the info-mercial version of it. Same guy, same car. I was mildly impressed. i mean, he gained 11 hp, but he was already pushing 500 heh. but i have royal purple in my tranny, i can notice a diffrence, espically since my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th syncros are going. =)

I saw just today on horsepower tv, they took a 2000 SS. Dynoed it before royal purple and it did 302.8, changed everything to royal purple, and it dynoed a 310, 8 horsepower gain! (rwhp)

Its because the oil is thinner and doesn't protect as well! +8rwhp, but the engine will be smoking before 100K.
