Well other than normal maint. in the 2 years that I have had my 99 such as the 2.5 sets of tires, altenator and battery, the brakes have not stopped squealing since I owned the car--I have had the entire system overhauled 3 times, driverside window motor replaced twice, pass. side is going now, shifter boot plastic retaining ring snapped into many pieces, and the black plastic triangular piece that is on the corner of the door on the inside broke, and to top it off, hopefully, the blinkers do not work anymore. Oh yeah the only speakers that work are the 2 front and the the one in the trunk space. No sound comes out of the rest of them

Ive had my firebird since mid July of this year! Its a 2001 still under warranty thank god. I love the car. But ive had to replace all brakes and rotors. Both window motors and regulators have been replaced 2 times on pass side 3 times on driver side. Also all coils and wires have been changed. Monsoon speakers have been changed. Had drivers side mirror motor thing replaced. Also 2 calipers where bad and replaced. Motor for light and both light housing in front where replaced. Now my drivers side window is leaking and diff is leaking and my power steering is whining really bad. That's everything that has gone bad since ive had it for about 4 months. Thanks god almost all was under warranty. Ive had it in the shop 4 times and its about to go in one more time. the car just hit 30,000 miles! Seems to be last owner didn't take car of it to well!

When the rear main leaks, it will leak oil at the rear main seal, at the rear of the engine. Oil will streak down and drip between your tranny and the engine. It can leak down the back of the oil pan, usually making a thick mess of oil build up on the rear of the engine. There will not be oil up high on the heads....unless a valve cover is leaking too.

The more mods I do to mine the better it runs its seems. Well my alignment is perfect ( did that free at school kinda cool) and I keep up on things, so mods just make her faster .

I too have a rear main seal leak. This along with power windows and window leaks seem to be a extremely common issue on our cars.

I replaced my powerwindows myself (regulators only) although the door assembly is a pain to remove without snapping plastic retainer clips of some sort which are hard to see.

The window leaks can be agrivating as hell, i fixed by adjusting some shims that are inside the door that rest up on the glass to "pinch" it into alignment with the top of the car window or t-top

The rear seal leak i have remains as is but im planning on fixing that and a small tranny leak as well later ...

Just my 2 cents

Anyway to the point :
If you really like your car then fix fix fix its the nature of a sports car in general to be expensive and broken frequently. If the car doesnt really matter to you then get rid of it.
I bought mine for 15k and im already 8k into repairs and resto on the thing

I dont know if anyone is still reading this post, but my car has over 125k miels on it, its a 3.4L. I dont leak oil, ANYWHERE, dont burn it, I had to replace the clutch and breaks when i got it, but other than an odd missfire problem that i've been working on, nothing really major has gone wrong like everyone on this post is complaining about. Maybe I'm just lucky. I've owned the car for almost 10 months now, and i know the previous owner beat it up (considering the test drive he took me on) and i'm not exactly gentle to the car either. :-D

I have a '94 3.4 liter with over 144k miles on it, and I can't really complain about much. Sure, there have been a couple of major things go wrong with it, such as shelling out a transmission and putting nearly $600 into fixing the front end, but that was all because of the fact that the previous owner was a complete idiot, and apparently didn't do any maintenance on the car. All I've really had to do to her has been change the plugs and wires, the front and rear brakes, a new serpentine belt and tensioner, a couple of window motors, and a new alternator. Now, this might SOUND like a lot, but when you take into account the fact that the car had 106k on it when I bought it, and I've put nearly 40k on it, I dont think it sounds all that bad. In fact, this has been one of the most reliable cars I have ever had.

Of course, it also doesn't help when you smack into a deer at 60 mph, but then again, we cant blame that on the car can we?

if you start throwing mods at these things and drive the dookie out of it you gotta expect these things. rear seal, no big deal. fenders, i agree with the diag above, lifted on those pinch welds that really arent pinch welds. the trans code may be due to dirty filter or something. probably nothing major. probably. i had a jet module that set the p1870 even after they sent a warr replacement.
you sure its oil leaking from the rear and not trans fluid? trans pump (impeller shaft) seals known to leak but not bad.
recheck torque on valve cover and oil pan bolts...

this is normal stuff dude. if you can bolt on mods, you can keep up with periodic maintenance. actually it should ideally be in the reverse order. maintian first, go fast second.

good luck to you

but PLEASE don't buy a rustang. if you do trade, go with maybe a grand am gt (those 3400's are no joke) or maybe even the new ohc 4banger making decent power in a light car. all else fails go with import but please please please dont rice it out. ;)

Same here my 3.4L was pretty reliable(on its own)

I had to adjsut the rockers at 115k, change some sensors, and the major repari being the ignition lock cylinder.

All my toehr problems were because of my driving habits. Woudl have happened on any car I drove like that.

Current car, can't complain, but it only has 33k miles on it. Can't say much with so few miles.

Mine runs like new....after a new tranny....but it's also a 91 3.1L and things like that are to be expected after 130,000 and when you drive the holy munkie dung out of it
