• Bad rear main - after affects?

I changed the oil this past weekend, and could see oil spurting from the passenger side valve cover gasket at high-ish (5500+) RPM's. This was the first change I'd done since buying the car in February, just hit 3k miles now. The chassis undercarriage was covered with oil stains, from the flywheel to the rear differential.

Took it to GM service, and got this verdict:

Oil Gasket (is there only one of these...?) bad
Intake Manifold bad
Rear main bad

This is all covered under warranty. $50.00 deductible, and I got a rental car in the interim (Malibu, UGH!).

Now the question - does any of the above problems contribute to other deeper issues that won't be addressed by the warranty work? Should I ask that they check other areas of the engine in light of the known damage that's there?

Thanks for any advice or insight.

If there are further problems, which there more than likely aren't, they will probably let you know. Only thing I could think of is oil on your clutch disc if you have a manual tranny.

Doesn't a bad oil seal foul up the spark plugs? I thought that when oil seal(s) went out that oil could leak into the engine block and mess the internals up. (Good thing I'm not a mechanic...!)

Thanks

I believe that you are talking about valve stem seals. If those leak oil into your combustion chamber, yes, it will ruin your spark plugs. The seal that he is talking about is a completely different one.

Ryan, as long as they fix them properly, you shouldn't have any other related issues, unless the oil level ever got too low because of the leaks, and you sustained damage as a result. And, short of tearing down the entire engine and inspecting it, you won't know if that happened until it spins a bearing. Joy.

I'll be picking the car up from the dealer tomorrow. Told him to take his time, even though the warranty only allowed 5 days of rental car, since I have another one. That made him happy, and so I guess he went over it thoroughly. Turns out there was also a broken bolt on the flywheel which is being replaced. So tomorrow it should be running good again (I'd been averaging < 12mpg, no hot-rodding or racing involved)

Thanks for the reassurance. I think the place I took it to is doing a thorough job, unlike the place I bought it from less than 3000 miles ago.
