Ive gotta question thats probably been asked before but im not sure. Anyways I was driving down our main strip and when I punch it in drive its alright but if I put it in 3rd i get so much more power.
Is it ok to drive around town in 3rd? Or its it bad on the tranny or anytyhing?
What speed are you driving at? If your tranny is in D,and your speed is high enough, it will take a while to down shift from 4th(overdrive) to 3rd and go when you floor it. If you put it in 3, you will already be in the gear so no down shifting is needed. Also, I don't think the converter will lock up when in 3. Whether or not there is a significant delay for that to un lock when throttle is applied I don't know, but it may feel like you have a little more pop when its not locked up.

It won't hurt, just gas mileage may not be too good. Once your RPMs get to around 3000, you may wanna go ahead and take it up to D. Stop heating up that tranny.
This one has some controversy as to if the car runs stronger in 3 or D. Most say that it doesn't. I for one, experienced the same thing that you did. Others have also.
There could be a few different reasons why this happens. If you have the shifter at 3, and you happen to be cruising at 3, if you punch it, it downshifts to 2. If it was in D, and you happen to be cruising in that 4th gear, if you punch it, it downshifts to 3.
You're on the right track. Wanted to get that in before the "benchers" started replying.

It is called being in your power band and steeper gearing!!
Take 35 mph:
if you cruise around in town in overdrive and hit the gas 1/3 throttle it wont really go anywhere
Try it again in drive, it will move better
Now put it in 2nd and try it, damn, the car will move!!
now, if you were not caring about the car and popped it in 1st and did it again then it would pull even harder
When I cruise around town I leave it in drive, not overdrive. I have a tranny cooler though.
Don't wind out gears.
You could heat up the tranny fluid and have it prematurely break down (as in viscosity).

Thanks guys I appreciate your help on that. I really didnt know and was curious. My car is going on 5 yrs old and i havent even broke 18k miles on it and i was wondering if it would hurt the car. I was messing with it and I really liked how it pulled when I was cruising in 3rd. Well for 3.08 gears anyways hehe
3.42s and lsd with shift kit coming hehe
and tranny cooler
Just wanting a way to make driving a bit funner.
I like the pull!
yea agree with 12secV6 here, but for track proveability, leaving it in (D) or D makes no difference. Manually shifting up..e.g. 1,2,D yields $hittier times. Hope this helps

Ok, this "bencher" has to correct you. Yours, and mine, and every 4L60 tranny unit is an electronic unit after '93. It will electronically downshift into the correct gear depending on your MPH and how hard you push on the gas. ie. you are at 90 and floor the gas, you are going to stay in 4th. However, you are doing 35 in 4th and floor the gas. It will most likely shift into 2nd.
