This should probably go in the drivetrain section but more people look at this board

My automatic transmission is shot, and i'm looking for some options.

Where's the cheapest place to buy tranny's?
I'm sure there are places that have transmissions that are better than the stock GM and are cheaper.

Is switching to a manual a possibility?

what would you guys do in my position?

thanks

Try checking out the new GM transmissions. Such as the 4L65E. I believe that is the one that is compatible with the camaro/firebird and will fit fine. Also there are reinforced models of the 4L60E trans. I would check out the current prices for these trans. You might also be able to find a used trans but the condition of the used trans would be questionable but a lot cheaper. Check the prices of the newer replacement trans and also the price of the 4L60E trans. Do a search on here for different companies that offer reinforced trans. Good luck.

If it is shot, the cheapest and easiest route is probably to get a rebuilt trans off ebay, like this one for about 600 + shipping + shipping the core back. Probably around 800-900.

You can get a rebuilt here, for 1300, that includes all the shipping.

Raptor will set you up with a 600hp tranny + torque converter for $2000.

Or you could always try to rebuild your dead one. 200 for a rebuild kit + 200 for tools + 200 misc costs.

Your taking a gamble with buying an already used tranny...i suggest rebuilding it so you know what your getting because in the long run you'll probably end up saving a lot more money then having two dead trannys

Have it rebuilt...ask around at the local garages and performance shops (real speed shops not "Extreme Motorsports" or some rice *** **** like that) and see who comes recommended these guys will know who does top notch work and won't screw you in the pooper (don't go to Cottman Transmissions whatever you do)

A good friend of mine rebuilt mine for 300 (no labor) the way I wanted it built (shift kit, extra clutch packs, better vavle body and drilled shift plates) and mine was FRIED (nothing inside was salvagable)

good luck

alright thanks alot for the help guys.

after looking around i'm going to go with a local trannsmission shop, it looks like it won't cost too much and they will be done real quick (for every online tranny place i found, i found a website that said "don't buy from this place").

jasper sells excellent rebuilt units with a great warranty.
the auto svc industry has come to realize that with auto trannies it is cheaper and more beneficial for the customer to replace wasted units with remans and take the core. you get very little warranty with reman unit. plus, if you plan to do it yourself, you're looking at about $500 worth of specialty tools from kent-moore to do the job correctly. do the r and i yourself, but take it to jasper for swap. that way you get better warranty and oem quality trans.
