  • Fuel pump question. Need answers ASAP!!

My friend with a 96 Blazer took his car in to the dealer and they told him it was a bad fuel pump and it would cost $650 to change it. $400 for the pump and $250 for labor. I told him NOT to let them do anything to his car and that I can fix it for him. My question is, do I have to buy a factory pump or can I buy an after market in-line pump, which is much cheeper, and use that with the broken internal fuel pump? Is it better to just go with the factory parts? If so where can I get the best price?

You can probably get by with the inline. The problem is, you never know if the old in-tank pump will stop the flow at some point...

When I took the inline filter off a '92 to replace it, gas ran everywhere, and kept running, because it was siphoning out of the tank...

I went ahead and replaced the in-tank one, just to be sure. It was my son's car, and I didn't want to a.) leave him stranded somewhere, and b.) have to do the fuel pump again later...

But it was a heck of a job to change it out. If it was my car, I would probably try the inline pump only...

The in-tank pump was like $35 from Autozone.

I'd look online or go to an auto parts store and get an aftermarket one. I'd do the intake pump because, like John_D said, it could restrict flow even with an inline pump.

          ok thanks guys.

          John,
Did you buy just the pump or the whole unit? I called and they said it would be $260. I asked if it was the whole unit and the guy did not know. So you can buy just the motor part of the unit?

I don't know about the setup on the Blazer. On the '92 Camaro, we dropped the tank, and pulled out a round piece with 4 tubes, a fuel level sending unit, and a fuel pump.

We bought just the fuel pump. The old one required pulling two wires off, a hose, and a pickup screen, then the reverse to put the new one on.

We also bought a new pickup screen, since the old one was torn... It was inexpensive too, maybe $5.
