  • How reliable are the early 4th gens? (98)

I have got my eye on a silver 1998 Firebird coupe with t tops that is at a dealer not too far from here... I want to know if there are any issues with that year since its an early 4th gen. I did a carfax and everything is good, 3 owners (first owner was in 97) and basically there is not a scratch on this car. Its beautiful. also on carfax it told me the last mileage check in was at 14,000 miles last June (i was looking at the car last weekend when they were closed) I am so tired of the corsica and its problems so i am so very close to just driving the corsica there and coming home with a firebird. Only thing that freaks me out is when i write a check, it doesnt want to work but the last time i tried that was march of 2002. LOL If i mail payment out with a check everything is ok... wtf?

Actually 98 isn't an early 4th gen. 4th gens are 93-02. I haven't had a single problem with my 98 Camaro and there isn't much new in the 98s that haven't been on another car except the front.

Early 4th Gens are 93's. In 98 They just changed the nose body style on the v6's. (V8's swapped motors also) As for reliability, I'd say they are like any other car, you take care of it, it takes care of you, simple as that. IMO

Grr speedy, you beat me to it :D

I'm driving a 98 Camaro with T-tops and I've got no major complaints. She did give me some mis-fire problems a while ago because of where the plugs & wires are at, but a $20 investment in some heatshielding takes care of that (and that problem is only shared by a few of the board memebers). Overall they are great cars and you shouldn't experience any problems outside of the norm (they never had any recalls on them that I know about...)

well i've had my 98 bird since march and no major problems.. ::KNOCK ON WOOD:: lol

umm. the only problems i've ever had concerns my right turning signal (it keeps blowing out when it rains) i prolly need a new seal...
and my accelerator cable broke, but i think that was because it looks like it started to rub on something, and broke it... dunno.. it happened when i got the car, hasn't happened since....

good luck = i really love my 98 bird...

oh and btw i only have 33,336miles...

I have a '98 t-top Camaro. No significant maintenance issues have come up. It did have an intimate encounter with a deer one night, but that's a different story... 88,000 miles on it. The pinion seal in the rear end seeps a little, but not enough to matter. Front rotors warped a bit. When I stopped going to the drive-through car wash when the brakes were "hot", I quit having that problem. Starter went out at 4 years. That's pretty much it.

Oh yeah, I've had the car since it was new, so my experience covers the whole history of this car.

bought my 98 in spring of 2001 with 35k miles it now has almost 60k, only problems I have had are the plugs and wires but a set of $40 taylors and new plugs fixed that problem. I also had 1 coil die but that was just one of those freak electrical things other than that I would say as she sits the car runs better than it ever has. just keep your oil changed and the other fluids serviced and it will take care of you.

Hmm, personally I love my 97's front end I think it looks meaner than the 98-02 front-end. Those look like Chrylers kinda...no offense btw just an opinion ;)
