It could be just about anything...

If the car started running poorly, then quit, it might be a head gasket. If so, you will most likely have gunky oil from antifreeze in it, and oily antifreeze in the radiator. That would be a way to identify it as a head gasket.

If you don't have those symptoms, and the car was running poorly, then quit, it is most likely a sensor problem.

If the car suddenly quit, then it is most likely a failure in something electrical. No ignition (or no power to the fuel pump). Several things could cause that. Loose power wire, loose ground, broken wire, bad crank sensor, bad relay, bad fuel pump, bad pcm.... Best to have the car scanned and see what codes come back.

Have they done anything else besides scan it? It would seem to me that an internal coolant leak caused by a warped cylinder head would possibly not show up on a scanner. Check the oil and the coolant- and also if you get the car to start again, hold a rag up to the exhaust pipe opening to see if coolant comes out..... just an idea.

The next time your car dies pull out one of the spark plugs and put the spark plug wire on the plug you just pulled out and then place it onto a visable part of the engine. Have somebody turn the car over as you look for an ark on the plug. If there is no ark then you have an igntion promblem.
