  • What wrong with my alt? I need help bad!

I have a 92 firebird. The wire going back to the battery gets too hot and starts to melt. Ican't use the a/c cause it makes the alt run fast and my motor starts to heat up. I've already been through one alt, and I dont really have the money to go through another one. I replaced the wires when i changed out the last alt. Except for two wires but i cant trace them to see where they go. I tried hooking up some pretty high amp fuses on each wire but they all blew when I tried to start the car. They where 250 amp fuses. Unless that isnt enough amps for a 100amp alternator. Do you guys think that maybe a bigger alternator would work? I'm going to try to do this before sunday. Im going to go back and try to trace the wires one my time but its very confuseing. Who ever had my car before me changed most of the wires. I think Im in a firebird nightmare.

how recently did you purchase the other alternator?? if it was pretty recent and this alternator is "dying" your battery may be messed up and drawing too much power from the alt, and screw the alt up too.. check the little tester on your battery, and if your battery doesnt ahve one, take it in to get tested... then take your alt into autozone to get load tested.
but honestly it sounds like a bad battery b/c the wire is melting because it cant handle the current that the battery is drawing

Ok, I found a wire that gets its power from the alt. It is really hot. Is it possible that I need a bigger alternator. This one cant handle it when I turn on the ac. And at night when I have my lights on the wires get hotter. Still confused....

unless you bought a lower output than stock alt for your replacement, you should not need a bigger one, if you have a big stereo get a capacitor... however, it sounds like there IS a problem w/ your alternator or battery... since the alternator you said is relatively new, I'd start looking at the possibility the battery is messed up... get both tested by taking tehm out of your car and taking them to autozone... post here if they pass/fail... but in general when one alt is screwed up, and then the replacement is screwed up soon afterwards the battery is usually to blame
