    I guess it should be mentioned that the fan power is not routed through the switch, or at least shouldn't be. You are basically grounding 2 relays. Probably 600mA tops. Now 18 gauge is probably too small, I wouldn't use it. I am too lazy to look up the recommended current/length requirements.

    I should also mention something about fuses. It does no good if you don't know what size to use. You should size it to 75% of where you want it to blow. So I would think 1A fuse should work. I am also betting you had a short circuit somewhere.

      If this mod is done by activating the relay, shouldn't that lead already be fused? I would think the relay control terminal(terminal 86) would be, and I know the fan power wire(terminal 30) already is. If you decide to bypass the relay and supply power directly to the fans then I agree that the fuses would be necessary.
