Mods, where to start?

Hey guys I just purchased a 99 v6 automatic camaro convertible. I'm loving it, it's far the best car I have owned (I'm a college student).

I am very pleased with it. However, I would like to make it go faster.

By fast I just mean 0-60mph. I am not worried about racing it, I'd just want to get off a red light a little quicker.

I think I have the 3.23 gears.

If I switch to 4.10 gears how much faster will my car be?

I understand 4.10 gears will kill my top end, but to be honest with you most of my driving is city driving, highway driving is less than 10% and when I do drive on the highway I usually do 70mph, I really don't see a reason to do 100mph on the highway.

I think my car does like 8.5 seconds from 0-60mph, is that about right?

What mods would make it do 6s from 0-60? That would be my ultimate goal and would be quick enough for me.

I know that I could just buy a z-28, but I got a REALLY good deal on this car plus it's silver with a black top, I would imagine a z-28 like that would be hard to find.

As always, intake and exhaust work is where you want to start. 4.10's would make the car a hell of a lot faster off the line.
As far as your 0-60, I'm pretty sure its in the mid 7's, but I'm not 100% on that. Anyway there are a lot of factors going into play for something like that. Just do the intake exhaust, stick the gears on there and take it to the track.

One question that I haven't found the answer to is: Exactly how much faster are 4.10 gears than 3.23s when talking about 0-60?

I know every car is different, but I would just like to get a general idea.

Would it shave off like a second?

Or maybe half a second?

Also, how do I check if my car already has an lsd? besides doing a burn out I mean.

Corey, I just checked out yours site on cardomain. Those rims look awesome, I was thinking of getting them.

Question, you have the 4.10 gears I noticed, how do you like them and what else can you tell me about them? MPG and acceleration wise.

Im pretty sure no 98+ automatics came with 3.23's. if it does it will say gu5 on the door. i think gu4 is 3.08, which is prob what you have. lsd is option g80 also located on the door.

as for intake you have 2 choices:
Whisper lid($130) or shave the factory lid(Free).
Ive had both and the free one is almost as good.
So i would just Shave the stock airbox lid, removed the air silencer, and do teh Free ram air mod.

if you search you can find how to shave the lid and remove the silencer(home depot mod).

as far as exhuast id say go for the TSP Rumbler($200), high flow cat($50), 3in S-bend(12).

lcas and torque arm will help you get a good hard launch and help keep traction. i wouldnt suggest a torque arm right away. get lcas first. theres mainly 2 styles, boxed and tubular. i like tubular, got them off ebay 100 bucks shipped. imo brand doesnt matter in lcas as long as theres strong and have poly bushings.

LSD and gears are always a great idea, but i dont know where that will put you in your 0-60 quest, but it will def help.

I think you're right, I must have 3.08 gears because at 50mph the car loafs at like 1200 RPM!

Also, when going up hill it's as slow as my old car, a 93 ford areostar. I really have to put my foot down when going uphill just to remain at a constant speed.

after intake and exhaust, gears and posi are the best mod. I went from 3.08's to 3.42's and that was a very nice gain. Now I wish that I had gone up to 3.73's or 4.10's when I had done it though.]

For a new guy I have to say I'm impressed with your knowledge of cars...

I don't have the 0-60 information for you but I can give you a general idea of what gears did for me on the quarter mile...

My old 98 had 3.08's and was said to run a 15.5 on the quarter mile...

My 97 Y87 RS came with 3.42's with LSD and was said to be capable of running a 15.0 on the quarter mile...

Thats incredible for just One Mod...

NIETHER of these I have personally tested so you may call B.S. if you want but thats what I heard and go by and actually sounds logical to me as my 97 DOES feel HEAPS faster than my 98... So to me, swapping to 4.10's would be an IMPRESSIVE accelleration boost from 3.08's...

Also, with the new gears you'll want traction too, so look into suspension, that can lower your 0-60 as well if done right...

other than that, CAI, Full Exhaust on top of that should easily put you in the 0-60 in 6 seconds with the above mods...

0-60 official quote is 7.3 seconds (on a 2002 v6)

nobody mentioned aluminum drive shaft.

shave air lid and get a smooth bellows. Open up the bottome or airlid, or do free ram air or buy a ram air kit (slp/ftraik)
An aluminum driveshaft is lighter and the less rotational mass makes the car peppier. So does iimproved air intake. these are great places to start and next would be exhaust.

i think that aluminum droveshaft shouldnt be one of the 1st priorities. after you get the intake, exhuast, and a lsd and gears i think it would be a viable step.

Engines are big air pumps. More air in, more air out, more power. Open up the intake and the exhaust and you will immediately make more power. Lower gears get that power to the ground quicker and they will NOT kill your topend. I don't care what you've read or what anyone says, it's just false. A lower gear will garner more acceleration in any speed up to the redline of the top gear which with 4.10s is 150. We don't have enough power to go that fast, so you won't "run out of gear" or "lose topend". My 0-60 is calculated at 4.99 seconds. That's more than 2 seconds from the official quote. Keep moddin'

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I honestly have notice no difference with the 4.10 gears as far as gas mileage is concerned but I DO NOT DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY. Acceleration is SOOOOOOO much better it's unreal.

Little G you cliam 0-60 in less than 5 sec. That is just awesome.

I have another quick question.

Let's say I get the 4.10 gears and then further down the road I buy a supercharger.

How will the two mods act? Should I get different gears if I plan on supercharging later on? Or would the supercharger actually make the 4.10 gears even faster?
