  • Help With Top End

First off, thanks a bunch for the advice with my cat. I got it fixed and everything works great. I was on I-4 today amd got into it with an Audi. Not many people on the road, so I figure what the heck and open up. The problem is that I was @ 110mph and this car was trying to get by me like I was nothing. I stayed ahead. I don't have the speed limiter modified in my car but I got up to 120..slowly. Is there anything I can do to my car to increase the top speed and length of time it takes to get there. I'd like to go at least 140mph in the car. Would SSRA(Ram Air) have helped me at all? It's an 02 camaro with a stock T-5. Any help would be great

Numericaly lower gears do, but then you would accelerate slower

It's purely a theory, but I think you'll go faster with numerically higher gears. The higher gears (numerically lower) allow for a faster top speed, but we don't have the power to get there. Lower gears (numerically higher) will red line at a slower speed, but you'll get there much easier. Either way, you're going to run out of power before you red line in top gear.

i hit 135 stock with my limiter gone.... scary ****, now my car is smooth, today i hit about 115 , gets there alot faster then when it was stock (not all my money was wasted) and i now have the slp cold air, need the other half of it to make it ram air tho. whats the link?

hit 150 on a 45 mph zone in the vette against a m3 a while back, stock intake on the vette. let off pretty scared to shift into 5th lucklely he let off at the same time i was going to(first time past 135)

higher theoretical top end... or actually up there.. the problem isnt the gearing to reach it its the actual wind resistance when you get over say 130 or so.. its like trying to drive through jello in a head wind...
my old 5.0's mustang with 2.73 gears top end in 5th gear overdrive at 6 K was 240.. but it would have never made it up that high.. top speed in those cars were around 145-150 it actually had a higher top end in 4th gear than 5th..

i read some where that at 6K with 3.73 gears you were doing 154 in these cars... you might ctually be able to pull to around 150

Is there a possibility of customizing my transmission to give me a little of both. I talked to the guys at GM and they will sell me a T-56 tranny to fit my car. The downside is that they want $7,500 for it. Not including labor. I even made sure it would fit and they said it would. I know a lot of people have had issues with changing to a 6 speed. Just out of curiosity, how much power would it take to redline 5th... asuming the tranny doesn't die on the way there?

A BW T-56 swap is pointless, some looked into it before and ws going to cost a lot of money to do.

                    Here is a good post.

If you plan to use 6th gear on the street you are going to have to alter your gear ratio's if you lack the engine torque. I wouldn't go with less than 4.11's

You will be taking a step down in gearing when you swap to a T-56. The gearing is less of a performance set than what our T-5's have.

First through third gears: T-5 vs. T-56
                    3.75 vs. 2.66
                    2.19 vs. 1.78
                    1.41 vs. 1.30

The gearing change without correction of the final drive ratio would account for a LOSS in engine power multiplied to the wheels by 82 horsepower in first gear.

                    or
200(HP) * 3.75(1st) * 3.23(gears) would equal the same power to the ground as:
                    222(HP) * 2.66(1st) * 4.11(gears)

So if you added 4.11's and 22 more horsepower you'd only be as fast as stock. But your gas mileage would be a little better when you cruise the highway. You'd cruise 70 MPH about 400 RPM than you do now. From 2250 RPM to about 1875 RPM.

I can see 140 MPH but I'd REALLY LOVE to see an V6 FBody top off at 150 without internal engine work...

With 3.42's would that mean I can hit a higher top speed than a 3.08 due to wind resistances being our major factor?

Well if you do it right and run some insanely high gearing, a 6 Speed WOULD be better than a 5 Speed as your shift points will be closer and you can keep the car closer to it's range of power. However you don't lose HP you just lose accelleration. Not to mention it's extremely expensive and for that kind of money you can make even your M5, HEAPS faster!!! In either case though for High HP application V6's it's in all honesty... better to run a A4 with a stall converter.

                              why would u spend 7500 on a M6 for a V6 when you can just get an M6 T/A, Z-28 for less?
