  • 97 oil leaks

are 97 firebirds prone to oil leaks? I bought my car about half a year ago with a leak in the rear gasket, which was fixed (I think that is what its called...I'm not too up on the lingo) and now I think its leaking somewhere up in the front (I'm seeing small oil spots on the ground around where the front axle is). Is this common?

First, as for the "rear gasket". I'll guess you either mean the Rear Main Seal.

You say you have leaks by the front wheels? The oil pan is up there, is your plug tight? Other things to check:
    -Oil Pan Gasket
    -Valve Covers
    -Power Steering system

Or, your rear main might still be leaking.

How hard is it to replace a Rear Main Seal? I was told the engine had to be lifted... is that true?...

well, the front seal can leak which is in the front, and GM power steering systems are prone to leaking. look under there and see where its coming from then get back to us.

Its in the front of the oil pan on the drivers side....

You guys are so helpful...when I bought the car the mechanic I took it to treated me like a 5 yr old and wouldn't explain anything to me...thanks for bearing with me and my infantile car knowledge...i'm trying to learn!!!!

if its oil it would have to be the timing chain cover gasket...

it could be power searing fluid to...... get some on your finguer and smell it
