  • Problem with 2.8

I have a friend with a 2.8 Fiero and he's having some problems. Here is what he wrote.

I have a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT with the 2.8 V-6 and I just replaced all of the plugs, wires, oil change, air filter, pcv valve, egr valve, egr solonoid, and thermostat. After I first did all of the repairs, the car ran great! About a day later, I started it, and It died immideatly. Whenevee I start it, I have to hold the gas pedal down to get it to stay on, but then as soon as I put it into drive, It sputters and dies. WTF is wrong with the car? oh, and there is no SES light coming on. I know also that the car is running way rich, because I can smell the gasoline when I get the car started, and there is ALOT of black suit in my tail pipes. SOMEONE HELP!!

    Thanks, Michael

Needs to hold gas down, but runs rich and makes black soot... hmmmm. Did he check the O2 sensors? Sometimes if those go junk you will get a rich effect that makes bad idle.

Fuel filter could be pluged? I'd swap that either way since it is a 87. He changed all that other stuff. I'm sure he can get a decent Fram at Walmart for a couple bucks.

I think I'd try those too things first along with some fuel injector cleaner. If that doesn't work he may want to check into the computer, and if that doesn't work. Then check into the valves.

    Hope that helps. ;)

Try the O2 sensor first, they go out in fieros about once a year. And if thats not it then try the throttle postion sensor. Its right below the throttle body and you can play with it to see if its sticking (thats common). Then try the fuel filters. Also, what does the code read, thats usually a good sign as to whats wrong. I believe the o2 code is 3 blinks, then another 2 blinks after you ground the computer out.

tell him to check the timing. If he took the distributor out at all when he did all of those repairs, he could have put it one tooth off when he reinstalled it. Have him check the timing and I bet that's where the problem is. I have the 2.8 v6 and had that prolem when I first rebuilt the motor. Just a thought

OR just for ****s and giggles he could just get a 3.4 L out of a camaro or firebird and but that in it or better yet put 3.8 from a Grand prix GTP Thats what I would do if I had his fiero.

and throw off the weight distribution the only reason why the car has a mid engine setup.

Agreed abotu everything said above, but jsut my experience with 80s GM cars, unhook battery watch TV, rehook it up and see if proble consistes, on an 85 camaro I had to reset the computer alot it woudl get goofy, if this doesn't do it what said above is all pretty true.
