This is my buddy's firebird... any ideas??

He started the car yesterday and it was fine, released the emergency brake and the bird stopped dead. Has not been able to start it since. When he turns the ignition gets nothing at all, not even a click even the dash indicators won't come up. The car has power he checked the battery and it is working fine as it should it was only replaced in June of this year.

    thanks guys...

A similar thing has just happened to my wife?s car. It was the ignition lock oddly enough. A ?nub? was broken and the car wouldn?t start; however she had full power. The emergency brake part is odd though. Could just be a coincidence ask him if the ignition felt different.

You might want to look at the nutralizaion switch.
I know I had the problem a few times in my old dodge.

First see if you have power at the little wire on the starter while cranking. If it does not, check your ignition signal to your park neutral safety switch to see if ignition voltage is making it there. If no check your ignition wire at the base of the steering column under the kick panel. If no power there, it is probably an ignition switch. If you get power there, but not at the park\neutral switch and if the car is before 1998, it has a theft deterrent system called a Pass Key 2 system. Gm in its wealth of good ideas used 2 tiny a** little wires hooked to your ignition cylinder that go down the column into a connector. They always break, it is just a matter of time. They read the resistance of a chip in the key, and give the pcm the ok to start. Either way, to test the pass key 2 wires, drop the kick panel under the steering column. Look for a big connector and you will see to very small wire ...white with some orange. Put the key in the ignition and test the resistance from one of the pass key wires to the other. If your meter reads OL..your pass key wires are broken at the ignition cylinder. It should read some resistance. If that is the case and it is the pass key system at fault, i am sorry to hear it. If that is what is wrong, you need a whole new ignition cylinder with new keys, $150+ if ya want 2 keys. Plus you have to remove the airbag, steering wheel, and go digging into the column to replace it. I have seen this problem before at the pontiac dealership i work at. I have replaced a handful of these. It is hard to be certin what the problem is though with out doing the testing for myself, so only use this info as a guide. I hope this helps you out.
