  • HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

I was driving home from work ,taking off from a stoplight and in first gear, about 17 mph...pop...and car would hardly move!!!!! What happened to it??? It was dark when it happened, I think smoke was coming from the exhaust...not sure what color though...could it be a head gasket...or since I like an idiot I took out my MAF screen, could something have got in there somehow????? Would that cause this problem???If say something of this nature did happen, How difficult is this to repair?? Better yet, how expensive??? I am not going to a dealer with this, they will screw me real good! The ses light started flashing and then stayed on...what is this????????please help me!

Could you drive the car home after it happened??

I have had the same problem with the "popping". Good luck finding out what it is, I've tried to figure it out for 2 years. If you do find out what it is, TELL ME!!

Take it to AUTOZONE and have a diagnostic ran on it.

If you were messing with the MAF, it is possible you could of went lean and melted a piston. Were you driving it hard before this happened? Also, I suppose a head gasket could have blew. Either option isn't cheap.

The SES light is probably a misfire light. I would scan it and start from there. Check for oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil. Then run a compression check. That should get your started.

not what I was hoping for, so just removing the MAF screen could do this? I hope not, because this is a common mod on this site! No, I was just taking off and about to hit second gear...right before I went to shift, i heard a noise and then, it would hardly move! Luckily, I was almost home! SO , any suggestions would be good.

I have no idea, but after trying to diagnose it yourself, I would just take it to the dealer. Look on the brightside, you may get a little ripped off, but they'll pinpoint the problem and ifx it for you. Plus whatever work they do on your car is usually warrantied for a year (e.g. I broke a pwr window, I pay for repair, and then if it breaks again within a year it's a free fix) Hope this helps

I think I know what happened...Some piece of plastic or something on the intake went into the maf...I believe. Had I not removed the Maf screen, I would be good!!! But since I did remove it, I think That I am screwed! Anyone know how extensive the damage would be? The car will crank and idle, I was afraid to give it much gas!! It sounds terrible! It has the smell of burning antifreeze. I checked the radiator and it looks to have some metallic depostits in it! The oil on the other hand looks fine! So, I think I may have a major problem!

any suggestions? how do I pull the codes, Can I get this done at autozone or somewhere? I think It is the maf sensor. So, it will barely move and I don't really want to drive it...I guess I can get it there somehow...

Sounds like a Head Gasket to me, and there isn't a code for that.

That would be my guess. I don't think removing the screen is what damaged your car. A blown gasket happens. Don't get mad at yourself.

if your filter was on there, then there shouldent be anything that could get past it, unless something entered, or broke off, past the filter, between the filter and the TB. Still havea feelign tis something else.

I concur, but, I reached my fingers in the throttle body and opened the butterfly a little...upon swiping my fingers in the TB, I got a sticky black deposit...like rubber or something!! I seriously doubt that this is normal!! Could a MAF problem cause a head gasket to blow? maybe a really rich cylinder and backfire (explaining the pop I heard) blew a headgasket? any guesses, I am almost to the conclusion that the MAF is screwed, and a blown Headgasket!

The black stuff in the intake is normal.

Are all the spark plug wires on? Are there any burns on the wires?

Did you drain the oil or just check the dip stick?

First thing I'd do is get the SES code scanned. That'll tell you alot.

Jason, Let me know when you pinpoint your problem and your engine size/year. Reason is, I have an exta MAF Sensor for a 96 3.8 that has NO MORE than 2000 miles on it. It's in excellent condition, and been sitting in my cabinet shelf for three years...untouched.
I replaced it back in 1999 because of a thrown SES code, and a bonehead mechanic at the time saying I needed it. Turned out, it was a O2 Sensor. So I put the old MAF back on, and put the newer one in storage for that "just in-case" day. I am ONLY going to sell this to you IF you need it. I'll sell it for a cheap price. I don't honestly want to part with it, but it sounds like you may need it more than myself, if it turns out it is in fact causing your problem(s) and you have the same engine.
                            Let me know,

thanks for the offer, i am not sure if it will fit a 98+ firebird...but if so, I'll probably take it...If necessary. I am going to try and get the codes pulled tomorrow, I will check the plug wires and all that stuff in the morning. I just changed plugs, oil, fuel filter, and pcv a few hundred miles ago. The wireslooked fine and all, but you never can tell...Maybe it is just the plug wires...I hope to God it is that simple...thanks for all your support guys, any other suggestions are appreciated!

by the way, I did not drain the oil yet, I am trying to see what I can when I can...I work nightshift...gotta sleep some of the day away!!
