  • Idler Pulley

Ok so I'm getting in my car a few hours ago to run some errands but notice a loud noise coming from under the hood. So I pop the hood and I'm pretty sure that the belt just needs a good lubing because I just replaced the altenator a few months ago. So I didn't think it was that serious and went on my way. I get about a mile down the street and all of a sudden I hear "POP!" and all kinds of **** falling under my car. Then I hear an insane squealing noise and immediately turn around to see if I can make it back to my house. As soon as I turn around I smell that dreadful burning smell and smoke starts coming out from under the hood. A few seconds after that my power steering goes out and my temp gauge starts steadily climing. I manage to make it back to the house and find that the idler pully locked up and and has been grinded to hell and find the belt at the bottom of then engine bay and it has been disintegrated. And me being the dumbass I am I touch it and burn the **** out of my fingers.

I'm guessing that this is a pretty easy fix but it sure scared the hell out of me. Should places like autozone have this and about how much would it be? Or am I looking at a lot of work?

    Oh and heres the damage.

That should be fairly simple to fix and the part(s) should be at your local auto store. I got mine for free through a friend but it should have been around $40.

Autozone told me they didn't have the idler pulley, so i went to advance auto and they had one, but it was wrong, so I had to buy the whole tensioner for 43 dollars. My pulley squeaks when it's cold out and I greased the pulley and it helped but didn't last long. I'm gonna try to just replace the bearing and take the tensioner back so I can save some money. It's an easy fix too.
