• Rear End Question >

I have a friend of mine who said he'd sell me a limited slip. LSD is from a 3 series carrier/3.42 gear. I don't know much about rear ends, so somebody let me know how compatible this is with mine (if at all), and how hard it will be to install.
Thanks

W68 doesn't get LSD, Y87 does.
W68 = appearance pacakge
Y87 = performance package

ooohhh.. my bad. i always thought the w68 was just the y87 of firebirds because i always hear y87 in regard to camaros and w68 for firebirds... my mistake

Assuming you have 3.42's it will work. If you have 3.08's then you have a 2 seris carrier and it won't work.

That's what I was thinking too. How hard would it be to get the parts that would make it work?

Couple hundred bucks hard (for new gears)
Hey and just cause you have W68 dont assume you dont have 3.42s....my W68 came with 3.42s

I know I don't have 3.42s - I have 3.08s. The only way a V6 A4 can get 3.42s is with Y87 option. You can see what gears you have by your RPO codes - GU4, 5, 6 and 8.

I know a reg firebird isnt supposed to have 3.42s but some were made with them. My bird is NOT a Y87 but I DO have 3.42s. I know about the codes and what not. But I guess you do too and know if you have 3.08s. Anyway...just letting you know that a few were made in the later years (mine is an 02) that had 3.42s that weren't Y87

It would be cheaper/easier just to get a complete rearend from a Z/TA. They usually go for a couple hundred bucks and bolt up pretty easily.

yes, but thats a temporary solution, because you still have a used rear end that will sooner or later need to be rebuilt.

You could say that about everything on the car.

true, but rear ends take a lot of abuse.... especially coming out or a T/A or Z. just my own take/ route I decided to go on the subject.

1. Used parts are just that - USED. There's a reason the previous owner is getting rid of it
2. Why bother when you can get a NEW Zexel-Torsen take-off limited slip from TByrne or Thunder for $95
3. Moving to Drivetrain!

I know there's still alot of interest in the fbody V6....
